There is a difference between Reality TV and actual reality. Would not have happened if they didn't have a whinge to get back on for a second season over "only" winning 10k in the first series. How does a professional athlete finish a career and have no money left is what I want to know.

$180k is pocket change for them.

Should be $180k fine plus they have to build the house to the style and design it was before.

But we all know what will really happen. Slap on the wrist and don't do it again.

LOL! My eyes are burning just thinking about it. If you want to whip them, then go ahead, but don't subject us all to that same torture.

@skater - why not? If we have to endure such riveting tv as "Dating Naked", naked whippings are one step further along the path. ;)

i'm still amazed that people insist on their "right" to someone else's property.

heritage listed or not - it's theirs. it's not yours to admire the view while they occupy the space under tenure. your right to view something deemed "pretty" or "quaint" or "old" is nonexistent.

if they respect that listing - great - provide incentives / breaks / concessions... whatever.

if not, planning laws should be so onerous and limiting that to replace it would be a step backwards.

heritage listings really do operate outside common law.

Michael Pascoe wrote an opinion piece for The Age arguing that heritage laws are counterproductive. He wants them to be scrapped.

I don't agree with him. If you've been to somewhere like Bath in the UK then heritage protection ensures that the city's character is preserved, and there are advantages to that.

However, I'm not convinced Dea and Darren's bungalow was a great loss. But they should have preserved as much as the weatherboards, doors and windows as possible. These looked in decent condition, and could have been recycled. The Acute House by Oof Architecture is a radical approach to this.

great post and exactly my point.

they respected the site and what was heritage about it, so got a decent concession and were able to capitalise on the site.

Yes, you are correct re Cairns. Developers bought a Cairns local heritage site (not on the Qld Heritage Register) and demolished it illegally. See the article here:

    http://www.cairnspost.com.au/news/c...-as-office-block/story-fnjpusyw-1227448130031

I seem to remember they demolished it at night/early morning, can't remember exactly. As a former Qld government heritage officer, I was appalled but this was at local, not state level.

Domain have a piece up about the now-complete "renovation".

Dea and Darren Jolly on their renovation project balancing modern in old-school street

I don't agree that a knock-down rebuild falls under the renovation banner. It's a rebuild, which probably saved them a few dollars over a restoration.

The house is now up for sale, so you can browse through all the photos.

I find it rather bland, both in design and interior styling. Something like Fooi-Ling Khoo's Acute House or Hello House are a much more interesting reactions to a heritage context.

A sliding barn door on the toilet. Considering the proximity to the living room, I would have gone for something more airtight and sound proof!

Re. Styling: Don't like the proliferation of cushions and throws...yuk.

And one of the bedrooms has a painting hung so low behind the bed, that you'd be leaning against it if you ever sat up in bed. Odd.

I don't agree with the council allowing the work to have proceeded beyond the illegal demolition.

They now have a clear site to build the poor replica that has been put on the market.
