A close friend of mine passed away in the US and his wife is Australian so she's moving back here to be with family. She will be bringing her savings with her and I was wondering which service people use to exchange currency?

The fees and rates are all over the place and I assume some PCers would have moved money back from the US to Australia. What did you find to be the best way to do it?

    TransferWise.

After a lot of research, trial and error, several changes this one wins hands down every time. Especially for larger amounts.

I used to use XE.com. But have now moved to transfer wise.

Set up a profile with them.

    Set up a transfer.

Select account to receive the funds into (and currency)

    Hit ‘go’

Then transfer the funds to transfer wise, and they put the funds into you australian acct.

Easy. Takes less than 5mins. And you recieve the money in about 3days

    Ozforex?
    Nope. Haven’t used them.

I’m not so worried about if it takes me one day or one week to get my money. I’m more concerned with saving $$$

I’m happy with a 3day turnaround to save a couple of grand.

World first is a better option than transferwise I have found. OFX are too pricey and restricted by our authorities. Transferwise are good if you are importing from China and other places but no good if importing from India!

Is that because they have lower fees?

Transferwise fees are very competitive but they don't work with India so we use world first.

There's an interesting write up in the FR today about the rapid growth of transferwise.

Don't use paypal for international purchasing, you are throwing $$$'s out the window. Check out and test www.transferwise.com, the savings are considerable for each transfer.

Have successfully used the transferwise debit card. You can buy on overseas websites and they charge you in foreign currency.
