It is not a technique; it's those long woolen undies men wear in winter.

Us baby-boomers call them Long Johns.

Looks like those bloody millennials don't like that term and have decided to call them Long Shorts.

I might have to read some of his stuff to find out what is so impressive about him, but his career history doesn't really make me want to take much notice of him:
    - quit college after a year (that's fine, many entrepreneur's bail out of uni and do amazing things)
    - worked in admin at sears for a bit (yep, fine, everyone needs to start somewhere)
    - started doing direct sales (hmmmm)
    - 2 years later switched direct sales firm, got mentored by big guns there. Must have been an extremely good sales person, built up Nutri-Bio, became VP in 1960 (making big coin in MLM - anyone posting stuff about MLM here now would get shot down!)
    - Nutri-Bio went out of business in early 1960s (was he really that good, or just exploitative?)
    - then he jumped on the motivational speaker circuit...

so was very successful at predatory selling (in an MLM) for about 10 years, then arguably jumped onto another predatory income stream of motivational speaking... I'm sure he made a ton of cash, but not in a way I would like to. But maybe you have to be predatory to make a ton of cash...? Maybe you have to define success by the size of your bank roll...?

As I said, I'll check out the book. But I'll borrow it from the library ;)

The deal of a lifetime comes along once a month.

I say it to my clients all the time when they start going down the rabbit hole and trying to make a poor deal look better. Sometimes you just got to let it go and wait for the next deal.

Its so interesting how one person can have one take on someone and another can have a totally different take and have had such a positive imapact by this same person.

Imo Jim Rohn advocates for a life/business philosphy which champions are built upon in all aspects of life. He totally transformed my llife and im sure many thousands of others as well.

It is quite interesting. For instance, I dont really value the "influencing" side of things - I dont care for the likes of Tony Robbins etc, I am always suspicious of sales people types. Obviously there are aspect of that in every day interactions, and utilising negotiation skills is always useful.

But I've never understood the way people respond to these motivational speakers - or indeed following political leaders etc.

He was a great salesman, and he was by all accounts a good public speaker, but what did he make? What did he create?

    Cheers,
    Inertia.

Do you stop and check who a quote was from before deciding if it's going to resonate with you or inspire you?
It doesn't matter where it comes from.

With all due respect - I am going to disagree with this - or perhaps make a modified version of it. After 20 years of investing, I think "time in" is undoubtedly important, BUT only because it let's you learn about the "timing".

I have written how about how our 1BR apartment we bought in 2001~ish rocketed in value, doubling by 2005. But then it stayed flat for..... well until now!

Here's the thing though - unless we had bought and had the "time in" we would not understand the importance of "timing", or even HOW to time the market....

Its just a quote. Infact for most of the quotes there is an opposite that is also true.
    e.g
    1. There's no such thing as a free lunch --> The best things in life are free
    2. Birds of a feather flock together --> Opposites attract
    3. You're never too old to learn --> You can't teach an old dog new tricks

    So YMMV.

Yes, I do. Well, kind of. I do not get inspired by a sentence. I do like to know the background of a "thing", and look more into the reasons, methods, and history of how how it came to be, and why it is important.

There are many prolific writers from history where you could cherry pick some choice quotes or turns of phrase. Here's a few after a quick google. The quotes in and of themselves could certainly be used as inspiration, but I believe context is as, if not more, important:

"Words build bridges into unexplored regions."
    - Adolf Hitler

"He who stops being better stops being good."
    - Oliver Cromwell

"It takes less courage to criticise the decisions of others than to stand by your own."
    - Attila the Hun
(the irony of this quote is not lost on me!)

"Impossible is a word found only in the dictionary of fools."
    - Napoleon Bonaparte

"The real strong have no need to prove it to the phonies."
    - Charles Manson

"I believe in one thing only, the power of human will."
    - Joseph Stalin

"Countless millions who have walked this earth before us have gone through this, so this is just an experience we all share."
    - Ted Bundy

"Better to live a day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep"
    - Benito Mussolini

"Defeat Doesn't Finish a Man, Quit Does. A Man Is Not Finished When He's Defeated. He's Finished When He Quits."
    - Richard Nixon

"A Creative Man Is Motivated by the Desire to Achieve, Not the Desire to Beat Others."
    - Ayn Rand

of what? The actual sales organisation he grew failed after a few years.

If his legacy is being able to talk, he may as well be a politician :)
