Nothing but my (gloved) hand - literally just reached into the drain, grabbed and pulled up. Then took the photo with my other hand.

This was a floor drain, to which both the sink and shower flowed. It was wide enough for me to get my hand/arm into, otherwise I probably would have needed to improvise with some kind of hook.

Those little cable rotor tools can do the trick.
A coat hanger works in a pinch too.

I actually did buy a drain snake (Kinetic 180cm Skeldings Pipe Drain Cleaning Tool) but was fishing in the wrong spots as I had the wrong idea about how the pipes flowed under the floor, so the tool helped in eliminating candidates for blockage. Once I twigged as to where the blockage actually was, it was easiest to just clear it out by hand.

I went all the way up to Katoomba, lovely day for it, 14º!
Must have picked the one day when the traffic wasn't that bad as well.
