I really do hope that this doesn't mean most of the greyhound are going to be euthanised though :(

This should be banned Australia Wide.

This all came to light on ABC program - 4 corners, they had a group go undercover and discovered they were using live bait which is illegal and other cruel practices, destroying dogs etc.

I think its a brave move, but if you saw the program you would be sickened, truly disgusting.

Completely disagree @MTR I think it's extremely poor by the NSW government to take a lazy approach to throw a blanket ban.

That's like saying some developers are dodgy lets stop development.

I saw the 4corners article and it wasn't pleasant. But punishing thousand of innocent because of those doing the wrong isn't the right answer.
There're all the trainers that are doing the right thing, staff at the track, food stalls, equipment retailers, vets....

It's a weak copout by the government, what do they think will happen to most of the existing dogs in work. The performing ones will go interstate but what about the rest, what happens to them?

Needed some tighter regulations around it for sure but banning it outright is pathetic.

But the whole industry is ugly, they ditch/kill the unwanted/unsuccessful dogs, and even the successful ones are only alive until they lose a few races.

Yes there will be an influx of dogs needing rescue once the ban comes into place.... but at least there will be no more incentive (in that state, and ACT by the sounds of it) to continue to breed dogs for racing purposes. So longer-term, less dogs being killed needing placement.

I don't see the correlation to development at all.

And yes, I am also against horse-racing, circuses which use animals etc etc.

Now if they can turn Wentworth Park to some parkland or school/sport facilities for the inner west, that would be a good thing.

I have a lot of sympathy for those whose livelihoods are going to be ruined, it's not just the owners/trainers but 1000's of people who rely on the industry in supporting roles. But when stories like those in the above links come out (on top of live baiting), it makes you wonder whether it's gone beyond a few bad apples and there's serious malfeasance/negligence in regulatory bodies.

Soon there will be no more dish lickers racing in NSW.

That can only mean more punters for other sports.......rooster fighting.

Hopefully this is just the thin edge of the wedge and people will stop using cruelty and inhumanity in other sports and industries as an excuse to carry on and make a profit from the suffering of others.
I remember that South Africans used to think apartheid was a necessary evil. Most of them eventually changed their minds once it was over.
Systemic cruelty. Only one way out. Well done Mike Baird and others.

I would love to see all animal sports banned. They are not voluntary contributors.

It's not a weak cop out by the government.
It's similar to the taxi industry complaining about lost revenue because of uber.

The dog racing industry has sat on its hands for decades in relation to animal standards. No one in the industry has been proactive in raising them. Why? Because that costs money, for the industry and the owners..
So they turned a blind eye and are now crying poor about it..
Stuff bickies in my book.. They are all getting their just deserves.
Sure there are some innocents suffering because of this too, but being complacent and knowing about the issues that exist makes you just as guilty in my book.

I love this ban. For the first time in a long time I feel there are some politicians worth voting for. Animals don't get to say what's happening to them and they get shouted out by those with vested interests in crelty who can speak. I totally admire NSW and ACT govts for taking this step.

    Living creatures aren't housing developments.
You said the Four Corners report "wasn't pleasant." That's a major understatement. I also have to disagree with you that the people making money are the innocents. They could choose to make money elsewhere, the animals are totally at the mercy of whoever owns them.

    Are you?
There are double standards, yes. But that is no justificatin for continuing with cruelty when it's been called out, exposed, seen by nearly everyone. We have to work with what's in front of us, one step ata time.

But glad you brought it up - ban live exports, firstly. Might follow MTR's lead here and put it in my signature.
Why don't you send a letter to your local member @Biz - it obviously works! :)
Or is your next question: Are your shoes made of leather?
