When deciding to have children (best things ever) there are obvious costs that come with being a responsible parent. One of these costs is a financial one. These days very normal for both parents to be working so childcare becomes a necessity for some.
I know diapers, formula, medical expenses, food clothing and things would quickly add up.
What would be a responsible weekly $ figure to budget in a new born to the family?

Terminology hint - it’s nappies in Australia, not diapers!

These days new babies tend to be breast fed if possible (add breast pump to the budget if the feeding parent is working) so baby formula might not be important in the budget for a new born.

Newborns cost very little actually once you have the cot, change table, car seat out of the way - $10 a week on nappies, wipes, cream. Clothes we generally were given as gifts or got secondhand. Breastfeeding is great plus its free.

Childcare can range between $15 and $180 per day per child. It’s highly dependant on what the centres local to you charge and the support you can get, if eligible, from Centrelink.

Yep as above. As a general idea, younger kids can cost a bit more than older ones as the carer ratio is higher. In metro Sydney I found this ranging from $95 to $170 per day (Eastern suburbs). Depending on your income, check out Child Care Subsidy to see how much can be covered by centerlink.

And you can say that (and not seem odd) but only if you move to the US!

I paid $130 per day for my one child three days per week. So just over $20k per year. Adding in that it was a rather average centre. Not flash by any means.

    Cool - a quick look tells me earning between 174k - 253k gets a 50% rebate.
    That's sounds pretty good.

Yes. But think of the cost if you had 3 kids....! Sure you don’t have triplets coming ? ;)

Once you have more than 2 kids in daycare more than 3 days a week, generally it becomes cheaper to have an au pair or nanny. Daycare can be frustrating as its after tax dollars sometimes going to work isn't even worth it!

That was our decision - not worth it. Glorified child minding with very little educational value. The sprog with lurning difficulty just didn't like preschool (learned to read by themselves & devours books, advanced maths etc) - the other one "no issues" ie worked out very early how hard they needed to work to get 50%.

The cost is more than a private school.

Once is odd, twice is affirmation.

My wife worked in childcare before we had kids, as it's such a low paying job she just stayed home, our third is due in 4 months and we wouldn't change a thing even if she was earning a decent wage.

When working she used to tell me how she was the person bringing up the child and the parents were essentially just waking them up every morning and putting them to sleep...

Imo, you get one chance to raise your young children, I'd be trying everyway possible to do it yourself over putting them in childcare as it's simply one of the best thing that happens in your life.
