I cannot believe our federal government is still debating about whether we set a target of 0 carbon by 2050 - or push it out to 2070.

With an attitude like that, we are doomed to be left behind in the rubble while the rest of the world sets it's 2030 target - and achieves it

I'm still waiting on an economic centre socially left party to vote for.

    Wishful thinking maybe.

The two majors definitely will not be getting my vote. Agree with other sentiments that we could see more of a shift to minor parties, which I think is a good thing for democracy.

It'd make question time, at least, worth watching - and probably make more sense

I don’t think SCOMO cares whether he wins the next election or not.

That's around the time the next submarine deal will happen, with delivery by 2070 :) Its probably about when the vaccine boosters will arrive, too :) And the Federal ICAC.... and any of the other hundreds of announcements that never materialise into anything ....

Even the most rusted on LIBS must surely accept by now that this particular lot of LIBS and NATS are utterly incompetent and useless. Some of the previous generations from both parties must be deeply ashamed of what they have evolved into.

But they do at least "appear" to have found enlightenment on climate change.... cos Rupert told 'em to.... and our head marketer needs something to sell the world at COP. Once Barnaby ( I mean seriously, THIS guy is what people vote for ) extracts the mother of all pork barrels, of course. Even Dutton has found marketing Jesus on carbon, and made it known publicly. There is a story that needs selling folks...to COP and to the electorate- cos its almost election time. They are about to show the world what Australian marketing and spin looks like. The world will swallow it whole, our marketer and his newspaper boss will claim a great and historic victory, short memoried voters will reward them with another do nothing term , Australia will fall further behind the curve, then in a few years the world will realise that the announcement didnt actually come with the action attached. All so sad and pathetic- from both the elected and the electors who put them there over and over again and never remember the things they have failed so badly at over and over again.

Between the two major parties, which would you go for?

Labour. Not a fan of their policies or leadership right now, but they are the lesser of two evils. My vote is skewed parties with policies that I believe have the best chance of bringing long term social and economic prosperity to Australia. I want to see more economic mobility for all people, access to cheaper education, and an aggressive tapered transition away from fossil fuels.

They do look like Liberal lite atm and it's hard to see either of the major parties endevouring on the kind of tax reform this country needs. The likes of the Grattan Institute, Saul Eslake and Ken Henry makes for some interesting reading on this front.

What would Australian tax reform look like?

It's amusing watching them think that they can change the climate and anything they do would actually make an iota of difference.
They used to be called fools, nowadays it's consensus science.

So we should listen to the flat earthers and vested interests, absorbing all the economic and political damage that incurs along the way, all the while adding to a slow moving crisis that dwarfs covid in severity? No thanks.

This is a question that should increasingly be asked. In the old days the answer was often 'yes' but elements of the public service have become politicised.

People who do the public good are great ppl including nurses, some teachers, health officials, researchers, and a lot of old guard.

The new crew of communication specialists, management operatives and political operators are self serving.

Well. When you have Nationals cabinet reps coming out of serious climate change planning talks, and all they can declare (yes you, Matt Canavan) is a scare tactic policy of "you'll all be forced to become vegans"

They're looking more ridiculous by the day. Over 70% of Australians have said they want urgent climate transition action, and this is the best the government have?

Climate action laggards are about as popular and sensible as anti-vaxers right now. In 2050 all those making decisions right now will be dead, or close to it.

They should be trying a hell of a lot harder for 2030 goals, but heaven forbid, then they might be accountable for it

We are the joke of the western world when it comes to this.
