How much? I'm buying in a fire risk location. Will it protect people?

No idea mate. You need to google 'fire bunkers australia'. For example:-

    Wildfire Safety Bunkers

What BAL rating is your property? They reckon these are rated for Bushfire Attack Level - Flame Zone (BAL-FZ) but I would get independent advice before purchasing

    Wildfire Safety Bunkers I Accreditation

My parents are building in a BAL-12.5 fire risk area. They are not building a bunker.

Not sure, it's high risk though. $11500 for 6 person bunker. Seems like good value, can also double as wine storage or meth lab. I don't like meth so wine will do.

Should make a perfect wine cellar! Just don't fill it up so much that you can't fit in there if a fire threat is imminent ;)

P.S. it will give you something to do while the fire front passes :D

I emailed a Y Bodansky at Strategic Studies a few weeks ago asking if they'd be doing a follow up on why their sensationalistic "report" was so wrong... no response yet :(

Not really.... You'd die from smoke inhalation unless you installed an expensive filtration system with a robust standalone subterranean power system.

Alternatively you could get a couple of those large compressed air tanks which you can turn on once the air becomes smoky. That should last more than a day for the fire to burn through the area.

We might still see a housing collapse in six months time if rates continue going up and we dip into a recession which will massively dent sentiment. ;D

Haha :) do you really think they sell BAL Extreme rated fire bunkers without thinking about how the occupants will breathe?

    Correction: BAL-FZ

Better get onto the people who certified these things then and tell them how to their jobs. No, I am not joking.

You've taken my comments personally & missed my point IMO.

Certifications are not the panacea for survival. Whilst these products are a better last resort than a broom closet, the fact is, that some form of secondary breathing equipment or an "active" air filtration system will greatly enhance survival prospects, especially in a wildfire situation. It's all on their website, including the fact that they allow for 1hr of air for 6 adults before you need to open the vent.

It is "their" facts, not mine....
BTW, as a professional engineer that worked in a HVAC & refrigeration company in his youth, then later a national engineering manager for fire equipment/vehicles for a very large organization, other than being able to read, I actually have 1/2 a clue.....

Still waiting for that Australian housing collapse.

Already 9 weeks late. If this keeps up, it will make QR trains look good :) :).

I didn't take your comments personally at all. I just found it interesting that you make some claims without backing them up.

For example you claim the volume of air provided by the system linked to is insufficient for 6 adults for an hour. What is the volume of air provided? How much oxygen do adults need to survive for an hour? Etc. Either the volume of air is demonstrably insufficient or it is not. If it is indeed insufficient you should either contact the certifiers, manufacturers or other regulatory authorities. You think I am joking about this but I'm not at all. The accusation you have made is incredibly serious. If you mean what you are saying then it would be very, very irresponsible to let this go.

The second part is that you might know about engineering but you may know nothing about bushfire behaviour or factors that assist survival. For example, how fast does a typical fire front travel? How long would humans typically need to shelter to survive a fire front? If the answer is less than an hour, you have no case. If the answer is more than an hour then this product should not be on the market.
