Haha well if you want to win the game, you gotta go risky.

I signed up for it last time. I quickly got bored because you can't make progress until you trade. Buy and holders don't stand a hope. Am registered again. Still unsure what I can do with the game to keep me interested.

Any thoughts on how people are considering approaching it?

I am torn between trying to win and making sensible investments like I would if it was my money I was investing

Yep. 50000 on BAT. Just like real life.
Or a split between it and NUH.

Our office runs this game and we compete for a small token prize.

It is a bit of fun. And yes - it is pretend and you need to punt to win.

Dang. You need to pick 4.

    1. Diversification rule
    2. A participant cannot place an order for shares in one particular company which would result in the value of the participant's total holding in that company comprising 25% or more of the participant's total portfolio value. This rule is not breached in the event that the share price of a particular company that is already held by the participant increases such that it subsequently results in the company comprising 25% or more of the participant's total portfolio value. Accordingly, the participant is not required to sell that stock.

Can't really see myself winning using Bki, MLT, argo, WHF, aui, qve! if the game was over 30 years could be a different story tho!

Nope, I see the word "trading" mentioned. So l'd probably come last given the way I "invest" nowdays.

Besides games, paper trading and the like never prepare you for the hardest test of all, psychological. And that can only be tested when you have real money at risk and have watched it halve in value during a crash etc. So spend time understanding your own psychology and how you will prepare for negative market events rather than wasting time on this other rubbish:).

For fun, I put yesterday's top 7 biggest losers from the ASX into a watchlist. $50k spread evenly between all 7. The portfolio is already up $2k.

These LICs were not even on the menu last time around. From memory, I think they had 1 or 2 ETFs and that was it.

I think the game is geared towards those who can do technical analysis and the like and buy and sell shares at opportune times in the limited six month window provided. People put in a lot of effort into playing the game and might be (mentally) rewarding for those inclined in such a way.

I am gladly not one of them. I might give it a go at some stage as I am registered. But I quickly loose interest as the game is fundamentally different to everything I have learnt in the last 8 years with investing in property and now shares.

I can't see myself putting much time into it. I can't do technical analysis either. I will probably just dump in some random shares and see what happens. Not what I would do if it my own money because I would like to generate long term income. For example, high yielding ETFs. Or more recently I have been reading about Aussie Dividend Aristocrats.

    Quoted for truth

    Also...

I entered the ASX Schools Share Game each year between 1999 and 2003 and was lucky enough to win it 3 times up against 40,000 students from around Australia. The game only lasted 8 weeks and I quickly learned that to win it you needed to pick volatile stocks and trade them aggressively – this wasn’t investing, this was speculation.

What I’ve learned from 21 years of investing

    I agree @Redwing, I don't consider it investing, I consider it gambling.
