He buys with the intention of holding forever but if things change, as they inevitably do in some situations, he sells.

Banks soar as ASX exits bear market

ASX exits bear market. The Australian sharemarket has exited its bear market, 11 weeks after it first entered it, as it continues its fightback from the COVID-induced February-March sell-off. ... That advance means the local market is now 19.9 per cent off the peak it hit on February 20

He he. Don't worry about the quality, feel the width.

Of course there is no formal definition of eithera a bull or bear market. May as well label them HappyDays 1 or PanicTime 2. Just as apt.

A Bear market is defined by fall of more than 20%. A bull market is a rise of more than 20% and you can have a bull market at the same time as a bear market , as a 20% fall takes a 25% rise to recover.

Wonder what's put a rocket up the banks today?

I was down $120K a few weeks ago, now gap has closed to < $20K. Don't know if I should be happy or scared. They're all long term holds, but still...

I am, as most are, aware of the accepted definition. However, that isn't what I was inferring.

I guess that just goes to show how hard it is to predict the future. Even the expert talking heads can't seem to do it. But we all need our stories and it making predictions keeps the media types interested.

He never said that. The preferred holding period for an asset is forever but if the fundamental value proposition of that asset changes to the negative then it's worth considering exiting that position.

That definition is completely arbitrary, simplistic and has no concept of time attached to it.

The following example is the DJIA over a very long-term period where it essentially went net sideways or over the long-term one's wealth (if made up of DJIA stocks) would have gone backwards.
