Tough week so far for the lithium stocks, that DKO announcement is very nice, they're one of the ones I just missed out on jumping on unfortunately!

Lithium watchlist is still performing absurdly well even with a little pull back this week, in fairness there was massive gains across the board last week.

Also missed the Cobalt jump last week (didn't have the capital to get on unfortunately), certainly building media coverage that cobalt might even be more undersupplied than the lithium is for batteries. Cobalt watchlist is up over 25% in the past week and more like 50% over the last two.

I received a couple of emails this week from two different multi-nationals informing me that a lithium based product we sell will increase by about 5% on Jun 1 due to global shortages.

As usual, read into that what you will and DYOR.

PLS actually reminds me a lot of NST who were a gold play that did similar, really solid company in a great position.

AJM might be even better though with their offload agreements.

The bigger picture is that WA could actually have another little boom on the way if a couple of the mines can get off the ground, lithium really doesn't look like slowing down over the next 5 years.

WOW... amazing day! This just keeps giving. In terms of flow on effect to the rest of the economy I think this will be fairly negligent. I mean Capex of 300 odd mill is tinny compared to the likes of IO projects (Roy Hill @ 13 BIL) but its a positive for the sector and region so that nice.
It will be good if all get off the ground but I think there are quite a few hanger oners....

It's a massively growing sector with a genuine shortage currently and growing in the immediate future.

Whether it's a 10 year resource before it is replaced or a 25+ year one is the big question but it's going to be significant. You have China essentially mandating it's car producers go electric, German manufacturers doing it by choice and Tesla becoming so popular that everyone in the US will follow kicking and screaming as the public speaks (Gen Y who supports it will just grow). More and more I start to agree with Goldman Sachs when they say Lithium is the next oil. Cars aren't going anywhere as a required purchase but petrol vs electric is a genuine battle that will be won by the better product ultimately no matter how much bullying the oil producers try and do.

Then you have the home use applications and of course all our tech gadgets that are already pressing the supply limitations from existing mines.

Australia is lucky enough to have several world class resources and a lot of stagnant infrastructure and equipment from the iron ore boom that should allow us to rapidly move into production, especially in the Greenbushes and Pilgangoora regions that are very close or on existing infrastructure.

The big question is whether the Australian government can get out of its own way and help ensure these projects happen in a timely fashion or if they will red tape everything into the ground.

The big BUT is other emerging technology’s that have the potential to supersede lithium batteries. There is a nice comparison on Vanadium flow batteries vs lithium which makes a good argument for flow batteries in home storage applications.
I take a lot of comfort from the amount of money elon musk and telsa are pouring into the giga factory that, at least for the medium term, lithium will be the way to go for cars.
Disruptive tech is a great place to invest and exciting times ahead for lithium!
I wonder if this will ignite the solar market a bit... The benefit of solar has been lost because you cant store the power yourself and they credits you get from generated power are scaled so the power companies always win..... Home storage / localised small scale green power suppliers change that!

I also hear titanium lithium batteries is the next emerging technology, a normal charge currently takes about hours but with titanium lithium it can be expected to take minutes. although still years away from commercialistion..

    Good th
At least Lithium is involved.... It’s got me beat why they don’t have changeable batteries that just drop out the bottom of the cars. That way you just drive into a battery station and it drops the old battery out and throws a fully charged one in there.....

The home battery section is the far more speculative part of future lithium demand. Zinc based batteries are also proving a very strong alternative for home batteries where weight is not a significant factor (Australian company RedFlow are one of the companies leading the charge on this front).

There are a lot of options but Tesla are the market dictator right now and they've gone hard into Lithium because it's an affordable and viable method. If it changes down the road then jump on board the new technology :)
