Assuming you have a Pi model 2 or 3:

Go here: OpenELEC Mediacenter - Download - Raspberry Pi2 builds and download the one that says "Diskimage"

    Download this: Win32 Disk Imager

I assume you can extract a compressed file, if not go here: 7-Zip and download the latest version.

Right click on the diskimage file and choose Extract. This will give you an ISO file.

Insert your micro SD into a card reader and plug into your computer, Run the second file you downloaded, you MUST install AND RUN as Administrator (Right click and choose run as admin to do this).

Point the app to your SD card drive letter *CAUTION*, If you select the wrong drive letter, this WILL completely wipe it.

Point the app to the ISO file you extracted

    Click Write

Wait for 3 or 4 mins

Take the Micro SD card out and pop it into your Pi.

Plug your Pi into your TV via HDMI (Important you use HDMI)

Plug your Pi into the network via network cable or plug in a wireless dongle to the USB

Plug a micro SD phone charger into the Pi and watch it scroll lines of text on the screen, it will then show the Kodi logo and boot into the media centre.

If you used HDMI, you can now control the menu with your TV remote, it will take 5 seconds after boot to recognize it then it should work.

If you don't want to use the network you can skip the rest of the steps altogether and simply plug a USB stick into the Pi and browse to that.

To add a network location go into the options (on the right) and scroll around, get familiar with the interface. Find the network and hook into your network.

Go to "Video" and choose the first sub option (press down then left when you get to Video), in there click "Add" to add a location, browse on a SMB (Samba) network and find your shared drive (might be on your computer, might be on a NAS device, depending on your setup).

    Enter login details if needed

Click OK and name the share

From now on instead of clicking Add, you will have your share available, you can simply click on there and it will go straight in.

To make your movies look pretty rather than just a bunch of filenames, you can use a too called "Media Companion", this tool will download the artwork and the IMDB information from the net for you and save in files for Kodi to read.

Whilst these instructions look long, I think you could be up and running in under 10 mins.

I am tech savvy - wouldn't mind trading some to be a bit more street savvy.

It appears that a person is either predominantly tech or street savvy

For people who are neither. It must be nice in blissful IgnoramusVille.

I have friends who sometimes get me around for advice (or assistance) on house repairs. So I wander over and say, 'Yes, all your computery stuff isn't going to help you now with your blocked dunny, is it, Mr smarty pants.'
Of course, that means when I have a computer problem I can't get them around because they will be unkind to me.

    Haha. I agree! :)

I invest with an investment partner. I am the smart one, 2 degrees, high paid job and tech savyy but not great when dealing with people and not a lot of street smarts.

My investment partner is a highschool dropout, still moderately tech but loads of streets smarts and great at dealing with people.

We are both fairly practical and can build things. It's been a good match so far. My book smarts and his street smarts work well together. Just put it this way, I might have 2 degrees but he knows a lot of stuff that I have no clue about. ;)

I am techy...but I HATE it when things are harder than they need to be....

It's 2017. Why does it need to be hard?

Make it easy to use or I'll use the competition.

The best example of this ever would have to be the iPhone. Technically it didn't do anything new that the big Nokia's had been doing 5 years prior. The difference was that mere mortals could drive it....

I am a Lego and Star Wars nerd. It almost goes without saying...

(I also have an engineering degree and spent 12 years in IT).
