I'm also guessing one partner might not get along well with the in-laws. Yearly gathering = fights. For Asian It will be Chinese Ney Year time ;)

Doesn't surprise me. It's a very stressful time of the year for a lot of people.

I see it with my work too. December really brings out the worst in people.

I am a bit of a crowd follower, try to keep up with the Jones', etc.

If this is the 'in thing', I better go and tell the wife.

Before doing so, will this have any impact on my Net Worth? :) :)

Ugh, not just general family law stuff. I'm still sorting out appointments and triage-ing domestic violence matters from Christmas.

A lot of people decided to beat up or stalk their exs around my neck of the woods. I'm sure its the same around the country.

Yep. Some of our DV stuff has blown up spectacularly. I read one of the affidavits this morning and it was brutal. The psychological stuff as well as physical, the death threats etc and people stay. In this instance all of them made by educated female in her 50's.

Too much time together and too much booze are not a great combination.

Jan/Feb is when people who over-committed themselves in December wake up to smell the roses. Money (or lack of it) can be the straw that breaks the camels back for relationships.

It really saddens me to think that so many people believe they aren't in a position to leave. There are a variety of reasons - the kids (although usually less of an issue by the time you're in your 50's), the change in financial status, even the change in social status. Some women, especially after prolonged abuse, have such low self esteem, they have no confidence that they can survive outside of a 'relationship'.

Some high profile AVOs on this side of the country - Stuart MacGill and Anthony Bell are two that have been getting a bit of press in a slow news period.

I think it's also a case of, over the New Year period, people reassess their lives ... and then wonder why are they staying with this person that is making them miserable

Divorce stats not that great to start with, is it just over 50% divorce rate?

Also the financial consequences, but this would be insignificant if its a loveless marriage.

Anyone know the stats with second time around? Just curious?

    MTR:)

Pretty sure 2nd time around is even worse. Relationships are shorter and a higher percentage split up.
Makes sense really, especially with rebounds.
I know plenty of successful 2nd marriages though. A lot of people take the time and energy to look in the mirror for 5 mins. Helps.

It's not anything like "over 50% divorce rate". Google is your friend ;)

Second time around the rate is higher though.

Do most of these divorced men then go and get Asian partners ?

Could the divorces means there are distress sales on the horizon ?

I mean't it as a genuine question. When I first arrived in Darwin, I just couldn't understand how/ why this was happening. So many older 'White' men with Asian partners. It is amazing the diaspora when you go to a local market.
