Hi just want to find out anyone travelled overseas since the Covid ban? If so, anyone used the reason
    • you are travelling on urgent and unavoidable personal business
as a reason to apply for exemption? Just want to find out anyone has been successful. Thanks.

My colleague’s parent is terminally ill and the colleague has recently (last few weeks) travelled overseas for that reason.

According to government stats, since the ban was put in place on March 25 until approx 3 weeks ago, more than 90,000 applications had been made with only 25% of those granted.

During aussie Winter I felt like I needed to travel to somewhere in the Northern Hemisphere where it's warmer, for medical reasons of course (my knees don't like the cold), but the airfares are outrageous atm. Had I applied, I probably would have fallen into the 75% of people who were denied. :)

I do wonder if you just set sail in your yacht if anyone could really stop you.

Thanks Alan. May I have the link to the Govt stats? Do they talk about the most common reasons for approval?

Might have to kill the dead uncle again as an excuse. Reminds me of an old episode of MASH in which Klinger was busted by Col Potter for re using dead relatives as excuses 'that's the third time this war your uncle has died'. Sounds grim there -can't escape the island.

When's virtual travel going to be a thing? So much untapped potential. I mean a realistic experience, not some cheap phone in a headset rubbish.

I once wanted to own an ocean going yacht, decided I didn't need the money pit, but I did speak with a few people who do own them.

Border security watches naval traffic very closely, especially in the north. There's been cases where they tracked privately owned boats for days before intercepting them. Case in point would be the multi-millionaire who tried to take his boat from Melbourne to Brisbane a few weeks ago. They might not stop you from leaving, but you've going to have a hard time coming back.

A couple of months ago I was talking to a friend from high school. She said her ex-husband designs abattoirs and does a lot of business in the Middle East. He bragged to her that his employer can get him on a private jet for work and even avoid quarantine.

This was before level 4 lock-down in Melbourne, I suspect it wouldn't work today. The amusing part is he told her this by text, she was just waiting from him to mention he's travelling. It might come in handy for their custody hearing. Some men need to be nicer to their ex-wives...

My pilot mates suggest private planes can be used to cross state borders with their transponders turned off.

I know people who have left to visit terminally ill family members, to relocate overseas and for work.

I am thinking if it is for business purposes. Such as needing to be physically present to sign documents or make deals. Anyone heard of such being successfully approved?

I know someone heading off to PNG shortly (new job).

Their excuse, "I'm an epidemiologist & work for WHO".

Who would've thought that old chestnut would fly?

I ******* hope not! Lol. No I don’t think that’s the case, it’s just tricky traveling at the moment.
