I am sampling churches at the moment to find one that fits. Looking for one that is enthusiastic and has a lot happening, but at the same time not fundamentalist.

Any specific denomination? Family friendly? Loud music? Active youth ministry? Specific programs that you are inclined to be involved in? Thriving life groups? I think the only way is to attend, connect and find one that you are drawn to.

balanced and open minded is what I am seeking. Somewhere where they don't take every single word in the bible literally and are more open to modern science (a lot has changed in 2000 years). Also I got no problem with gays, or women's rights to make decisions about their own bodies, and I am ok with wearing clothes made of two different types of fabric and do not want to be put to death for that sin.
I don't mind too much if the church I go to has different position on those things I mentioned above, but as long as they are relaxed about it.
i like the idea of a compassionate, prosocial, non-judgemental church that has a good inclusive, community spirit.

Is there a specific denomination? For those who haven't grown up/lived in a Christian environment it may not seem a big deal - but I'd definitely suggest looking at the denominations before specific churches and go from there.

There's also a big divide between the old school churches and the new super churches - the former are suffering a bit in attendance but the latter fall more into the fundie/Americanised style churches which can put some people off.

Edit: you beat me to my post. I'm not an expert of theology - but Anglicans are more towards that end of the spectrum. Female priests, gay acceptance etc. Still case by case by the individulal churches, but they're known to be more reformist than others.

@Whitecat Interesting post, might be controversial too. ;)
Brought up in a 3-generation Catholic family, have 5 nuns in the family, from having priests for dinner to (almost) an outcast, I think I am also a fundamentalist like @The Y-man. A topic we can chat over a glass or two...

Edit: Sorry will answer the OP's question: IMHO, at least for Catholic church, I think they are quite different and you really need to visit each one of them and decide for yourself. It very much depends on the Priest and the Council. Some are more active than the others. In my youth days, I go by the cutest Choir Leader. When I get older, i chase after interesting Priests. Now I am more matured, I yearn for a loving and caring community. I went to some "happy clappers" and they are too charismatic for me, no offence.

I don't go to church any more but I would if I could find one where my personality and education fit in. My son wants to be a pastor/theologian and is currently working out which bunch to gravitate towards. We were talking last week that Anglican is about the best fit as far as social justice goes.

Yes but your thinking more along the lines of networking with the Eastern suburbs investors.. that's where most of them can be found hybernating. :p

I don't know much about it but the uniting church also seem to have a strong social justice platform I'm going to check them out as well
