    It is a wake up call, for sure. A friend of mine broke her back in the balcony collapse several years ago where one lady died.

    And a house nearby that sold for over $2m had a balcony that was not attached well enough. There were many people standing on it during the auction. Afterwards the new owners had it checked and the builder beefed up the supports where it joined the house.

    I reckon there would be plenty of inadequately built and/or maintained decks around. Certainly it is worth checking decks.

    To date I haven't bought anything with a pool, scary stairs or 2nd level balconys. One less thing you need to worry about as you can only safeguard so much.
