I live about an hour south of the CBD now where it is quieter, and used to live in the South Eastern suburbs, and have been in Melb generally for a large chunk of my life.

The CBD is a great place; always stuff happening these days, food, entertainment, Casino, sports, trams, beaches, arts and theatre....loads of other tourist attractions....

For people living close to the city - especially on the south side in areas such as Albert Park, St,.Kilda etc where the access to the beaches and all points south and east; a great place to be.

Not much of a fan of the northern and western areas.

I would love to live in the CBD, if you mean Geelong CBD, Ballarat CBD, Toowoomba CBD etc. As for Melbourne CBD, there probably isn't anywhere in Australia I would want to live less! Except perhaps Fitzroy ;)

I lived in Melbourne CBD for 7 years, literally in the heart of CBD- across the street from Flinders Street station.
I loved the convenience and being able to walk to work. Coles was just downstairs, Fitness First across the road - happy times.
I am now living in Mordialloc - I hate the commute.

    Calling @Tony3008

    :)

For those that don't know, the 3008 refers to the postcode of where he lives - and he'spretty much as close as you can be to the CBD without being in it.

Gockie2008... pretty much as close to the city without being in it. A great Airbnb property. I could live there too... in fact, I will tonight for the first night of Vivid :)

It's also a walk to my new office too. (Slated to move Oct/Nov this year).

I lived in Carlton for 9 months in 2013 for a Graduate Program. Loved every moment of it. Every weekend I would walk to a different cafe for masturdating (its a thing, look it up!) and I would eat out everyday for lunch and dinner. It was the life. Tram from Nicholson St to the city near Southern Cross Station for work in 20 minutes. I would had loved to live in the city as my friends lived there! Sigh I miss it, it was much easier to catch up with close friends than living in Sydney. It can get quite lonely too here.

Thanks Y-Man. I spent my first 50+ years in suburban London - loads of good things happening in central London that I never did because of the hassle of trailing into the centre. Now I live in Docklands and it is brilliant: supermarket, library, pharmacy, GP, eateries, quayside, trams, trains all within a few minutes walk, the CBD itself walkable or a free tram ride. I only own a car because I volunteer on a project not accessible by PT; for my first four years here I didn't own one: just used Flexicar when I needed a car, which was rarely. Only downside of Docklands is the wind and cold in winter - am looking to move to somewhere north facing.

I wouldn't mind living in docklands to be honest, easy access to south Melbourne or vic markets, access to CBD for those working, spectacular views, free tram zones, eateries, grocery stores close at 12 midnight, Chinatown, easy to get to the airport (compared to say living in doncaster).
and as much as ppl rave, the areas are developed and kept clean really well if say you compared the landscape to preston or even clayton.

I don't live in the country, but in the outer suburbs and I love going into the city, I wish I lived there too. Love all the bars, laneways, food and just the atmosphere. Would be great not to have to drive in when we want to go there, annoying having to limit drinks etc. My hubby refuses to get on the train so we don't have that option..

Not spruiking CBD apartments or anything, but I think the responses to this thread indicates why Melb CBD rents are still relatively high - people DO want to live there!

Not the CBD itself but we live on the border of Potts Point/Rushcutters Bay in Sydney at the moment and it's great. I can walk to work in 25 mins and we have everything at our doorstep. If I could afford 800-900k for a decent apartment, I'd stay here but we can't so it's back to Canberra for us in July :p
