Does anyone know what this is? It makes sounds occasionally roughly like a clock ticking over a minute or hour.

It looks electrical in nature, somewhat outdated.

Ps, top job on the skirting boards ;)

It's definitely electrical or phone-related. I have a feeling @Scott No Mates will know.

Reminds me of an old thermostat sensor but I don't think they were that low on the wall

Does it have any vents/openings? The other thing could be a door bell sound box if it has some vents for the doorbell ding

No, but could it be an old school telephone ringer?

@shorty - Either a GPS receiver for a Russian nuke left over from the Cold War or a housing for a solenoid/relay (is it a hot water unit)?

Nah, I wouldn’t know what it is. Definitely wouldn’t hide anything in it. Too obvious. Better off just tossing it on the coffee table and camouflage it with some clutter.

Nope, not hot water. Might be on the money with the Russian nukes.

Can you take a photo of the bottom and other side? Any cables/wiring going to it?

There's nothing on the bottom or sides. I haven't opened it but I'm fairly sure it's powered. It makes a sound every now and then like there's something mechanical inside, like something turning over. Reminds me of those old flip clocks where the numbers flip over.

It appears to be an extension bell set for an old gone Bakelite phone.

Test if its electrical. Run a hose on it.

Or maybe take a image and wander into a electrical wholesalers. I once had a mate with a holiday house with something LIKE it. There were two (house was once split into two units) Not identical to image.. We wondered why it would tick and whirl. Turns out the house once had a electricity meter you put money into. Real old school. He had a sparkie decommission them as it had been discconnected years earlier but knew it was a issue as it still was connected to the board.
