@pinkboy , that's some awesome running times. I only competed once in the past few years and that was at the Xterra trail half marathon in 2013 from memory. I did that in 1h 24 minutes but that was some seriously hard course!

I've been trying to get back to competing but finding time for it is a bit hard these days. My 5km personal best is 17.38 but i'm sure i can beat that these days.

I've always been better at shorter distances than longer ones so hoping when things calm down a bit, that i get a chance to train for a 4 minute mile! Would be awesome to achieve that.

3:10 in training as a long slow run? Lol.
I can only dream of running a Boston Qualifying time.

Yeah, Ive done a few 45s and 50s running training in my silly younger years when I was invincible. Ive learned my lesson now and focus more on quality at reduced volume (cycling only now).

I am currently training in a f45 gym and love it. Sure it costs alot more than normal gym membership but but how can you place a figure on your health? I was previously with another gym where it was similar to f45 and provided a diet plan- lost 13kg in 7 weeks. Now with f45 because the intensity is of a higher level.

I recommend everyone to give the one week trail period a go and see if it's for them. Always doing different exercises all the time and knowing that I am the worse person in the group really motivates me to keep going and getting better.

Money spent on health and fitness is money well spent.
Fitness can cover health, hobbies, interests, even socialising, so you're covering many areas all at the same time.

The Berlin Marathon was run last Sunday in 23 degrees and humid, managed a 4hr 3min which placed me approx. 14,400 out of 40,000 and 63rd of 370 in my age group.
Mixed feelings about the run, achieved a PB but missed breaking 4 hours.
The decision now is do I run Boston in 2018 as I'm now qualified.

Started weight training when I was 19 and played many and varied sports before that both competitive and recreational.

45 know and been lifting on and off (more on than off) since and have went from a very lean 67kg (classic ectomorph) at 193cm to 105kg currently 26 years later.

Did muay thai and western boxing as well and had a few ring fights that I did ok in. Too old for that now though as its hard on the body. Still hit the bag a few times a week as well as skip and shadow box with the occasional light spar.

Like anything its consistency and perseverence that will get you what your after.

Awesome. How did you get an entry into the Berlin Marathon this year?

No brainer for Boston. Go for it!

    The Yes's have it.

    Great effort @turk

You may not get another opportunity to compete at Boston. If it's important to you, go for it.

G/day Colin,I was having a quick look through this thread (something I hadn't done previously) and noticed your post.I didn't think there would be anyone with similar interests outside work besides me so I will post a quick reply. I've also always thrown a few weights around in our boxing gym and am still trying to do so at the age of 63. I've never lifted very heavy but have used them to compliment the boxing training. I was also interested to see that you have had some ring experience,I am a bit biased but I think it is a great sport even though it isn't going as well as it used to in it's heyday.I was a pro boxer from 1968 on and off (kept going back to rugby league football in the winter)until my last outing in Dec 81.I reached main event status but mainly boxed around the Riverina area as the game was going very well here and there were a lot of venues putting on fightnights. I still am involved in the game as a coach at the local PCYC Club and I also have a pro Cruiserweight who was in the Number 1 position in Aus and NZ until he substained a detached retina and has had a long (18 months)layoff since. His name is Anthony McCracken and we hope to be back in business in a couple of months.I have been following the property forum since the Somersoft days but have hardly posted at all, preferring to just read the various posts coming from people who know a lot more than me (poor old bricklayer ) about how to get a quid from property. All the best for 2017.Regards Terry.

@TerryN are you still laying bricks at 63?

You must have looked after yourself if you still are.

Thanks for sharing a part of your story.

Yes mate, still putting them in,although we (son and I) did spend quite of bit of time on the building side of things in 2016 as we are both licensed builders also.We are off to Coffs Harbour in a couple of weeks to do a two townhouse project on a block of land that my son has held for a few years now.I suppose we will be coming and going for around six months if the weather co-operates.Regards Terry.

    Hey Greg,

I'm still hanging in there and will be timing myself in a few weeks on a proper track.
On a bumpy rugby field yesterday I did a 12.4 and 12.3 for 93m with slow standing starts and a short 10m stopping distance before crashing into the brick clubhouse.
My 6 month goal is to get as deep as possible into the 11's for the 100m, which will put me at my fastest ever at 42 years old.
I think I only just cracked 12s at my final high school year athletics carnival when I was super agile but weak, never trained for anything.
Gained over 10kg of lean muscle since then and have been training, so can't see why I wouldn't be quicker now than before.
More determined now than ever also.

@Ace in the Hole , how do you manage to keep muscle mass? Food only(chicken,eggs,meat..) or do you add some protein ?

    @paulF , I'm only a lightweight being 78kg at 6ft tall.
At 18 I was skinny at about 65kg.

This is my natural mature weight now and I eat a very ordinary diet, far below average if compared to health conscious people.
I have a protein shake before bed if I haven't eaten much for the day, or did resistance training that day.
I can maintain weight on very low calories now, but in the past had to stuff myself like crazy to gain anything.
It's been easier to gain/maintain muscle as I've gotten older, probably because of increased knowledge.
For me training is the 20 of the 80/20 rule.
i.e. Training gets me 80% of physiological results, regardless of everything else.
But I give that 20 100% effort, which is the most important factor.
Don't have any calories to waste on useless cardio.
    It's likely different for others.

That's awesome! I used to run only and started lifting around 4 years ago. What a difference, love it and can't do without it these days.
I follow the 80/20 rule too but i still love running and struggle to keep muscle mass due to too much cardio so i changed my runs from long runs to hard short (5/6km runs) and i still add a few longish (8/10km) runs every 10 days or so.
I'm 76kg at 5.7ft and had to go down on cardio to stay well built but well toned. My diet is very clean but not high in calories and adding a protein shake or two a day depending on exercise made a massive difference in keeping muscle mass.

    I'm 5 11' and weigh 80k's as a Vegan
I eat ok, love a drink on the weekends.
I've been into weights for about 30 years now, went really hard when I was younger but have backed off now I'm in my 50's. I'm still in the gym 5 days a week though and that will never change. I took up long distance running at about the same time and you're right, it's hard to keep muscle mass when long distance running. What you're doing now on the track replicates what you're doing in the gym - explosive short bursts, you'll keep more muscle that way.
I've lost muscle mass since becoming a Vego but take supplements and amino acids to keep recovery and strength up.
The good thing is I can eat as much as I want of the good stuff, with the occasional takeaway, being a Vegan - I love my food.
I think weight training is a way of life and helps you make yourself feel good about yourself - builds confidence and mental strength - so you boys keep up the good work!!
