Was a long distance cyclist who then got into natural body building after an injury. Competed for 4 years in INBA. Actually should say half of me was into that, the other half has only appeared since I got so much into business and sat on my but for hours a day. Started back at gym 3 months ago with my eldest son. My bench press strength has come back really well so I can rep 6-13 at 120kg, problem is that used to be 30kg more than I weighed, now it is less.

Go for the powerlifter look.....lest range of motion required on the bench.
So are you saying you used to weigh 90kg and rep 120kg, and now repping 120kg again but bodyweight is over 120kg?

    What's your lifts/stats?

I don't do powerlifting, just general training, at home.

My goal was to hit 90kg CJ, 70kg SN and 140kg back squat @69kg class. Currently way far off due to injuries and lately the damn cold!

    What's your bench/squat/dead?

    I'm no powerlifter but did about 125 / 145 / 212 at about 85kg.
Never trained much more than 3 or 4 months without lengthy breaks.

    My kind of thread Ace.
Was into football (league and union) in the younger days, together with judo.
Got into track and field for many years, winning state and national junior titles in discus.
Training for this led to powerlifting comps. Won some state titles and national bench titles.
Little bit of Oly lifting (one comp) and these days just mucking around with a little bit of everything, including golf.
Was a professional strength and conditioning coach for many years (RPI used to work for me!) but been out of the system for quite some time.

I played football since I was 5 so was fortunate to grow up with sport and an idea of fitness. Ride my bike mostly for leisure and fitness, go to the gym at least 3 times/week. Always a bit slower in Winter, will start doing shorter sprints/interval in Spring. Look forward to picking up some ideas here.

    Nice resume.
Seems like many have gone thorough a variety of training styles at different stages.

    Good work guys.

    Spot on.

Also my 1RM was 155kg when I was 89.5kg, and that was feet up crossed in the air so no legs in it. Not yet game to give a 1rm a go, couple of months more before

    Hi Ace,

Based in Melbourne, and around your vintage. Great to see you taking such an active interest in your daughter's athletic and personal development.

Track sprinting is a magnificent but very unforgiving and exact scientific sport, so as the boss used to aver in Hill St Blues "... Let's be careful out there" :)

FWIW, I really enjoyed viewing the Bill Phillips's series below. He's ten odd years older than us, but a well known figure in the bodybuilding game, who has adapted his routines to better align with his age. I think the approach is very wise.

PS: Did you get that artificial turf put in, that you previously enquired about on SS?

Watched the vid, seems like he's just saying take it easy when you get old.
I remember back in the day when I was starting in late teens that he had his EAS supp company, promoting Body for Life, giving away cars, etc.
He was a good marketer and has always had a biggish build in him.
He also was very theoretical with his research, but that was to sell his supplements in the end.

It's a good message though, to pace yourself and don't act indestructible like early 20's.
I did a hamstring a few months ago chasing down my daughter after spotting her a 50m head start, not good.

What do you reckon you coud do for the 100m now?

I didn't put any turf in yet, maybe a little later.

Haha in my wildest dreams. The video is a compilation of all the weightlifters at the international level including world record holders. They're insane...like my mancrush Lu Xiaojun- reps 240kg back squat at 77kg BW.

100m now? I was running 11.5s when I was 14 .... I made a serious comeback post injury fix at 32, and ran 15.2 for my first time trial. Six weeks later I ran 12.2s. Three seconds improvement in 6 (very serious) weeks was very dramatic. I then tore a hamstring in my final sprint in that session. Hence, my forewarning on the exactitude of the discipline. So the odds are I'd run about 15s now, and then likely improve dramatically with serious training. However, with 3 year old twins and a desire to be seriously wealthy, the time and motivation are no longer there for that type of (essentially professional) effort. To replace this, the spin bike and free weights provide a sensational alternative, where "balls to the walls" efforts are not subject to injury, and yet still provide the metabolic stimulus of running sessions of yesteryear.

Your tearing of a hamstring reminded me of my own tear. Humbling in the extreme ...

In terms of your athletic resurrection, given your age, if you could break 13s for a 100m I'd be very impressed. I'd be even more impressed if you could crack 55s for a 400m. At 40, and presumably without having sprinted for a number of years, that would be utterly exceptional. You have mentioned previously that you are effectively retired .... why not give it a crack?!

    Cheers
    Greg

    Hi Greg,

I might just give the sprinting a crack.
Never trained sprints, but something I've always wanted to do since high school.
I've always had an interest in track and field, true athletes, but never really had the opprtunity or atmosphere to get involved.
Now I live reasonably close to a synthetic track, I'd like to give it a go.

I'd like to take both those time challenges of 13.0 for 100m and 55s for 400m.
I could be retired, but still very busy working a business and have a 6 year old.
It would be so much easier if one did not have work comittments...

Do you have any warm up/stretching routine references for sprinting?
This is something I'm very ignorant about and need to start paying more attention to at 40 years old.
I think I've got a bit of Anterior pelvic tilt going on, which makes me more prone to hamstring injury, also bad when squatting.
    Need to stretch hip flexors.
