Travel & Holidays Am I being petty for not “releasing” a plane ticket I can’t use?

    Or it could sit empty.

If it were me I'd call and ask for a refund. They are the ones who made the change in the first place.

The person in the neighboring seat would be happy :)

I have cancelled many airline tickets 1 to 2 hours before departure and the seat has been occupied when I board (I buy 2 tickets on fully flexible and often cancel when not flying ) so I believe they oversell

I reckon that if there was a cancer patient who needed to use the seat, and the OP didn’t show up for the flight, the seat would be used. So the guilt trip probably isn’t necessary.

If you cancelled, how do you know the seat is filled?

Incidently, even if filled, it doesn’t mean it’s 'your' seat.

If you cancelled, the airline can let another passenger - with their own ticket - use the seat you would have occupied - without selling that passenger your ticket ...

We buy two seats on flexible ticketing
If one of us are flying I cancel the other ticket close to the check in closing time (to try to keep the seat vacant )
If the seat is taken I talk to the person in the seat
(We get a full refund on cancelation)
Like I said "believe " ...I don't work for the airline so I am really guessing

Unfortunately I talk from personal experience and it did not work like this. The seat needs to be booked for sick patients.

Travel agents and people in the industry can buy standby tickets at about a quarter of the standard price and often fill seats for no shows and last minute cancelled purchased seats. I know because years ago I worked for an agent. I can vividly remember running through an airport in heels to get a plane when I had a standby ticket...(fully Australian airlines too - iaata discount)

In Canberra they often cancel flights last minute and even after they were due to take off if they don't have the right number of passengers that have checked in. There was an article recently in the paper about it.

75% off is the typical agent discount. Airline employees typically get a much higher discount. Dad worked for Ansett when I was a kid we got 97.5% off economy domestic fares. Seated in first, then business if no first seats available, then economy.

When the flight colses (half an hour before departure) if they need the seat they will allocate it. You might have made a staff member on standby very happy.
