Overly dramatic isn't it? Reminds me of some of the anti uber hysteria

Just used airbnb over the weekend again without any problems.

As most things, it appears dramatic only till it happens to you.
I wonder if the women in India who got raped by the Uber drivers share your sentiment.

I am not saying the idea of airbnb or uber is bad. Just watch out for the dodgy ones.
If one is adventurous enough couchsurfing offers free accommodation as well as renting off Craigslist/gumtree.

There have been people I've met through airbnb I still keep in touch with. It makes a place so much better when you see it through a local's eyes. (Travelling by myself I have opted for sharing a place rather than taking a whole unit). Some places haven't been all I would want, but others have been superb.

I've hosted a bunch of people on Airbnb.

    Like, over 70.

    Not one bad experience.

    Dozens of amazing ones.

    A handful of life-changers.

Unlike the safety of taxis in India? Or buses for that matter?

Alarmist nonsense does no one any good.

I jave a friend who ises it a lot. Only one less than positive experience but that was minor. I'd use it. Haven't done so yet but everyone I talk to says the reviews etc are much more based in reality than something like TripAdvisor.

Stop being ridiculous. Once you can comprehend the what comparing Apples to Oranges is you will know, asking someone to watch out for the dodgy ones is hardly an alarming advice.

Ok. It did however come across as highly alarmist, particularly combined with your first post.

It's like saying internet anecdata and watching Psycho means I will never stay at a motel in case of crazed owner WHO HAS KEYS TO EVERY SINGLE ROOM!!!111!!!.

Timely topic. I just found out that an article on airbnb/home-sharing/short-stay accommodation I contributed to for Your Investment Property magazine hit stands this week.

I figured I should let the cat out of the bag before someone else notices ;)

I won't do YIP the disservice of publishing a legible copy of the full thing but here's a couple of snippets.

Hehe. At my Friday night work drinks just now I pretty much spent the time telling them about being an Airbnb host and 1 guy might take it up. I also spoke a lot about this forum too so maybe they'll get on it!

Tried using AirBnB tonight to book some accomodation. The booking process for a new user is terrible. There is a horrible multi-step verification process required involving your drivers licence/passport, Facebook or linked-in account or alternatively a video verification.

I wonder how many potential guests have given up and turned to other accomodation platforms, etc.

From a host point of view, the verification process is a good thing.
I get contacted often by people with no verifications or photo or anything. I tell them they're not going to have any luck with me (and many hosts) without that stuff. I rarely take people without reviews, either. And I'm now mostly skewing myself to guests over 40, but that's a whole other story.

I stayed at air bnb it was fine, however I took my info off (Card number etc,) and lo and behold , the next time I went to look at something it had stored , my personal info. I wasn't happy about that I didn't want to pay in that currency... I would like to use it again, but I have tried and tried to get my card details off ....
