I'm currently running a Daikin inverter split system in my PPOR. The unit in the living room stopped working last week after we heard a short screeching sound so we got a repair person in. We were charged $210 for call out and for them to have a look.

The guy said the electrical board in the air con unit was broken and motor might need to be replaced, said it might be $1000-$1500. Work will take couple of hours.

This seems a bit exxy, just wanted to see if this price is reasonable?

It is probably beyond economic repair and better to buy a new one. If it is less than five years old then warranty claim is worth a go.

For $1500 i would put in a new unit. If its reasonably modern and same refrigerant gas, it should be an easy change over

Agree with the other posters. At $1500 I'll just buy a new one.

I've had daikin splits (back to back) installs for $1500 for the 2.5kw to $2200 for the 7kw ones.

In Perth, install costs me around $600 (decent installer), and the unit for a 3.5kw fujitsu / panasonic is between $700-900 depending on what sales are on at the time. That's $1500 max. Better off buying a new one.

That's in the high price range, once the elec board goes ,the next in line will be the heat-pump..Maybe as this would be a simple install as all the pipework will match up with the new unit and the elecs inplace ,purchase a new unit ..imho..

Thanks for the feedback guys. The tradie mentioned that if I was to get a new unit it'll have to be the exact same unit due to it being a split system (there's another unit in the bedroom). What would the installation costs approx be?

    Is it an insurance claim?

Nope, the excess is $1000 and I'm guessing it'll raise all of my premiums...doesn't seem worth it.

I'm guessing you mean multi-split. One outdoor unit to multiple indoor units.

Upside: Maybe just need to replace the head unit which may well be cheaper
Downside: You might have to replace the whole lot.

It sounds a bit strange that you have to use the same unit with Daikin because that implies you have to use an old model - maybe give them a call directly with your model numbers?

    How old is it?

That is precisely the reason that there is more than one insurer.
