Speaking of books, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Motivated Money :)

If you're anything like me and want to invest in shares but are lost and want to learn then you really need to read this book and then read the famous Beginners guide to LIC PDF on here.. Its in a thread somewhere. You can search for it.

    Welcome - Motivated Money

If you're a senior reg and he's SET3/4 or something then really, whatever you do at the moment the majority of your future value is still in your skills, not in investment returns.

I'm only PGY2 at present, but personally I've mostly ended up with an shares/indexing approach. Once I calculated out my probable income over my expected working life post-fellowship, I found it ended up significantly higher than any possible amount of spending I'd want to do. Given that, the extra effort of real estate investment for a fairly marginal potential benefit really didn't seem worth it to me

I'd suggest reading most of the Other Assets forum here, then skimming through this thread: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/index.php?topic=21335
