How did playford come up? This is a business and economy thread.
So you haven't made any money so therefore no one can? One of mine has gone up 20% organically since I've had it and the others were nice reno/dev plays. It's possible you overpaid or misread the market.

Yes it is... not sure why the property market in Elizabeth and unemployment stats are driving the discussion

You are pretty optimistic. I don't think so, maximum 20%. I'll sell my IP the next moment after my PPOR will be ready to move in.
I love Adelaide but not for investing or business, just to live in and enjoy life.:)

cant complain regarding Perth market we had a property boom from 2001-2007, possibly longest boom in history of Australia. No mining boom around the corner, may be some time off before we see history repeat this.

Yes they will...my cousin worked on the original Collins class....2800 jobs for Adelaide...and more importantly they plan to use Aussie steel for Whyalla might get also saved in the process.

Thar ya go @D.T. dems the stats you were looking for...but don't hold your breath about core Professional Services or Financial Services moving down there...it ain't going to happen. Sydney and Melbourne are all over those industries..and are at a global scale.

As @sash said earlier Adelaide needs a lot more people in order to "pick up"

There are just too many business's here operating already and not enough people to support them.

Any speculators here on how many more jobs will be created in and around the shipyard/port news?

I.e. we know that ~2,000 or so jobs the shipyard will created and this will ramp up towards the early 2020's. We know that it is sustainable employment too, seeing as there is a 25-year project life to it (once the subs are done they will transition into frigates etc.).

But as someone who doesnt know the Adelaide market, will the 2,000 jobs be net-new, or will this pretty much just mop up the fallout from the autos and manufacturing dropouts Adelaide is facing?

Second question. How many p eripheral jobs will be created too? I.e. with 2,000 workers, their partners, children etc. will be with them too, so how many doctors, teachers, McDonalds teenagers, Council people, childcare workers etc. jobs will also be created? Anyone care to speculate? I.e. will Adelaide also add another 1,000 (for example) peripheral jobs off the back of these 2,000?

I don't really believe there is mop up from this, they've been slow trickling them out the door for a few years.

Definitely some, but probably less than you suggest as I don't think many will relocate for the purpose. Adelaide is easy enough to traverse.

Yeah I suspected as much re: the autos. And besides, there are likely only a limited number of the new jobs would have crossover skillsets from automotive I suspect. Good for Adelaide and SA overall though.

Both Adelaide university and Deloitte have conducted economic impact reports, Adelaide uni predicting Armageddon/Deloitte predicting little impact. (or if you believe some of my work colleges from the southern suburbs i will soon be living in a post apocalyptic suburb hunting roaches for sustenance:() I like to think the truth is somewhere in between i cant imagine there not being some pain from this. I hope D.T. is right as i certainly have a vested interest in this being a smooth transition.

Not sure if anyone has yet mentioned the planned 40ha food production facility planned for Parafield. I have little knowledge of this industry but the plan is to manufacture and export to china. If the current success of Bellamy in china is anything to go by, i think this could have great potential.

yea, and most new business from overseas will likely end up in brisbane/syd/mel. Adl has no chance. ..unless they significantly give corporations tax breaks etc. One issue is that there are not many ppl to choose from ( if you are a company) unlike the eastern seaboard. enticing business from syd/mel is very difficult. .briabanr has done it with tatts and echo/star entertainment. ..but had to offer big sweetners for them to make the move.

Thanks for the share! I heard murmurs about the food facility - is it actually happening? If so it is exciting because it is more sustainable (everyone will always need to eat, right?).

Hopefully things like this, and todays amouncement that the Kidman Estates will NOT be sold in one lump to a foreign owned company, is a nudge in the right direction re: agriculture (i.e. Aus needs to "Sell only the milk, and not the whole damned cow"!!)

Similarly sustainable employment news ocer in Port Adelaide from the shipbuilding is also exciting. Maybe Adelaide's economy will fight back!

As far as i know its still a goer, my understanding is the Chinese appetite for clean food is literally bottomless. Not sure how true it is, but someone did mention to me that Australia's total food production running at full capacity would not meet the demand of 1% of Chinese population!?
(Would love to hear comment from anyone who has any connection to this or works in the industry)
Also there is quite a large expansion about to commence next door to this at the Pooraka produce markets.

Another development is also about to commence on the opposite side of the airport called the "district" its basically going to be a mega retail outlet, (70 tenancies pre- released on there website).
There is also a planned entertainment hub to be built adjacent at a latter stage to be called "Kings point" (Wave rider pool, indoor sky diving, rock climbing, cinema, etc).

Cool! I'm going to take a stab here and guess your name is Jason?

Jason what suburbs are we talking about, for the entertainment/retail mega-center? West Beach? Seaview? Henley Beach?
