Australian Space Agency lands in Adelaide

"The South Australian government made a strong case to attract the space agency, allocating $1 million to a dedicated Space Innovation Precinct as part of a larger $400 million renovation project to turn the former Royal Adelaide Hospital into an industry hub now known as Lot Fourteen."

"Federal minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews said the state is already home to more than 60 space-related organisations, counting more than 800 employees working in the sector."

20,000 high paid jobs the Advertiser said.

We have another Multifunction Polis money pit that will fizzle into nothing. Big deal.

I think SA started to have significant investments in different fields, however, there are not enough drivers for a strong growth of property market in a near future.

Define strong growth? Pretty much every suburb I track has been increasing over the last 5 years.

Brady, I came from Asia, therefore, my definition of growth might be different from yours. For me strong growth is like 10% and more per year. Around 5% annually is slow considering all costs occurred to maintain a property. Property prices increased a lot in Wakerville, Campbelltown, St Peter... I mean 10-15 km radiation from CBD surburbs, also coastal surburbs such as Glenelg, West Beach, Henley beach... but not much for the ones of longer distances. Developers earned much money for the last few years but sales are slower now. I attended some auctions in Campbelltown recently. Only few people appeared and offers were very low, a lot under the vendors' expectation. There were 10 bidders at least a year ago. New houses are sitting longer in the market. Going along streets I see shops, business closures quite often. Farms closed or are struggling. I have my small business in education and see how Universities are struggling to increase number of international students who pay high education costs, as well as local ones. Most graduates leave SA for Sydney, Melbourne .. for jobs. I think SA now has many great factor for future growth but it takes time for a larger population, many more jobs and higher income. All this is just my own opinion.

Same as Ararat. Once in a while one of these guys gets out and the town has to lockdown their children. But also provides a lot of employment.

I'm from Victoria. At least you have enough electricity for traffic lights in summer...

Major expansion of BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam another step closer

BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam expansion declared a major development by SA Government

A major expansion of BHP's Olympic Dam mine is a step closer, with the South Australian Government declaring it a major development proposal.

    Key points:

    • The expansion would increase Olympic Dam's production of copper, gold, silver and uranium
    • It would create 1,800 jobs during construction and 600 permanent jobs
    • Plans still need to pass a series of environmental, social and economic tests
"The expansion would increase the mine's copper production by 75 per cent and employ a workforce of 1,800 during the construction phase.

The State Government said the $3 billion proposal would increase Olympic Dam's annual copper production from 200,000 tonnes to up to 350,000 tonnes and increase its level of gold, silver and uranium production."

They're all open on Sundays. We go to a cafe for Sunday breakfast most weeks

Most cafes in suburban Adelaide are open on a Sunday, but I recall a few years ago I was in the CBD on a Sunday morning (e.g. ~8-9am) and found it difficult to find a place that was open.

Not sure if it's changed, but I have my doubts. I expect the 11am start for shopping hours & fewer people living in the CBD (compared with other capitals) contributes to few cafes finding value in opening on the Sunday morning (or at all on that day).

    Power-packed car return
150 jobs created as electric car maker plugs into northern site

    Richard Evans

The world’s biggest electric vehicle maker will set up shop in northern Adelaide, less than two years after car production at Holden’s Elizabeth plant ground to a halt.

China’s BYD Co, which produced 560,000 electric cars last year, has signed an agreement with SA-headquartered EVANT to develop and deliver top-end passenger cars from a facility in Edinburgh Parks.

About 150 jobs will be created over the next few years as EVANT aims to build 5000 cars as quickly as possible.

EVANT director Christian Reynolds – who helped develop Elon Musk’s Model X Tesla in California – said Adelaide met all the requirements.

    Car plan has star power

Car making in South Australia can expect the full Hollywood treatment, under an ambitious plan to build custom vehicles at Elizabeth’s former Holden plant.

The brains behind West Coast Customs (WCC) – a Californian car restoration firm which has spawned a Netflix and Foxtel TV series – last week visited the Holden site, now known as Lionsgate.

Lionsgate owner Ross Pelligra said WCC founder Ryan Friedlinghaus wanted to set up a custom workshop at the site, employing up to 50 people including ex-Holden workers and a team of apprentices.

Pop star Justin Bieber has a stake in WCC, which accessorised the glitzy Lexus in last year’s Marvel film Black Panther. Other WCC customers include former star basketballer Shaquille O’Neal and reality TV star Kylie Jenner.

A contract is yet to be signed, but Mr Pelligra was confident of a deal with WCC, which has amassed a cult following during eight seasons of the TV show Inside West Coast Customs.

Is this going to be like the 20,000 space jobs? When can we expect the space jobs?

There's a lot of talk so far about job creation and quoting many job numbers of increase. I haven't seen too much happening, although I can see a lot of activity and infrastructure building. Are we seeing the foundations of job growth being laid and it's just a matter of time before we see the jobs manifest into reality? We have the subs and frigates which are starting and this appears to be administration etc, will the main jobs be a few years aware?

SA' unemployment has last month increased to 6.1% which is equal worst with Western Australia (now also an unemployment hot-spot).

The scheme(s) outlined above to turn the old Holden site into a car manufacturing hub is pie in the sky, it'll never happen. And its about the third scheme that I can count to return car manufacturing to that site including a proposal by Sanjeev Gupta and another one by a Chinese company. Our unemployment here in Adelaide isn't quite as bad as places like Central Queensland or Northern Tassie but the incomes and wages being earned by an entire industry is gone and I know that the bankruptcy of York and a few others has sent ripples of fear through the building industry.

The submarine project hasn't really begun yet (not fully in swing till 2022) and even when it does it will directly employ less than 1,600 people which is a drop in the water. These are highly specialised jobs and there's no guarantee that any locals will be have the skills to fill them (457's anyone?) - like that stupid space port idea the people actually doing the work will probably not be drawn from the local population because we simply don't have the skills here. And frankly we're competing with established players overseas - even India has its own space port now and you can bet they'll be cheaper to use than South Australia.

Every idea to try and move some kind of mass manufacturing or large scale industry here in the last few decades has fallen flat (Multi-Function Polis etc), and every single time the SA government shells out money for someone to move here they end up finding it un-viable and leave... Westpac's call centres, Galaxy Pay TV, EDS computer headquarters - they all ended up packing up and leaving after their government subsidies ran out. With the highest retail electricity charges in the world who can blame them?

If I was a young person leaving school I wouldn't hang around here, our reputation as an unemployment black hole isn't undeserved and its only going to get worse.

Are you suggesting the likes of Sonnen Batteries and Technicolor will go the same way as other have in the past and move out once the Government rebates have runout?
