Indeed. Poor example. Croydon has had more upward growth that many other suburbs around Adelaide. Some outer northern suburbs however are still where they were 10 years ago, dropped considerably ~2011 and have only increased slightly since.

    Haha, yeah.
But looks like the new Liberal government is also stiffling new entrepreneurial business ventures.

Not many jobs available in Mount Gambier. Would guess that Correctional Services are one of the largest regional employers.

Minelab set the standard for recreation Gold detectors, and Codan Group brought them.
Codan started with specialized communication equipment. Most of the production are in Asian.

I`m sure Minelab commenced designing and manufacturing metal (mine) detectors for the military. Initially mine detectors for land use then specific design applications for navy. Their technology was and probably still is cutting edge. After some time they realised the expanding market for the recreational market and professional gold miners & prospectors.

Minelab used to be located at suburban Underdale. Driving past their premises indicated some serious security, electric fences with razor wire & cameras, much like the big house on Grand Junction Rd.

Codan used to be a client of mine back when I worked in Adelaide (late 90s), always had some pretty impressive comms tech.

Was looking forward to a project where we were going to provide consulting around trying to get email communications working over their low-bandwidth radio communications networks, but I got offered work in Sydney and relocated before I could get started.

Why, because house values have held up relative to the east coast? Where is the large scale private sector investment that's going to generate lots of jobs? The whole state is on the dole - defence and education are our biggest employers. We're incredibly vulnerable to a down-turn in Commonwealth revenues - the subs can still be cancelled (there's a clause in the contract that allows the Commowealth to cancel or off-shore if circumstances change).

Not going to post the exact property as this would compromise my friend's privacy. But yeah - the last vendor saw nil capital growth in almost nine years. Admittedly houses are much better but that's really because of the land component and the suitability of the suburb to split blocks etc etc.

They've already clearly shown how hopeless and populist they are. Case in point - last month with great fanfare they decide to quadruple the fine for possession of marijuana to $2,000 because (as Marshall said himself) they wanted to send a message that they were 'tough on drugs'. Then they realised that the entire world was going in the opposite direction with pot now legal in Canada and many US states - so within a matter of weeks they had back-tracked and made possession of cannabis an expiation fine again. Flip-flopping - no idea what they're doing.

Also they promised hard and fast that they would deregulate shop trading hours within a matter of weeks of being elected - recall Steve Marshall standing outside a closed Westfield Marion on a public holiday. But what's happened since? Flip-flop, flip-flop. Lots of business groups including Foodland and other independent retailers have been running a campaign to stop it from happening and now Marshall has announced a 'consultation period' on the proposed Lower House legislation. Can't even reward their big corporate backers and deliver an election promise for fear of alienating some of their supporters... so... flip-flop, flip-flop.

Expect more of the same for the next three-and-a-half years.

That community has a bit of a love/hate relationship with the prison - and yes - they're a large employer. It's about to turn into a much larger facility with a doubling of the number of beds (to 300) announced in last year's state budget.

That's interesting that they are expanding in Mt Gambier.

There was talk of building a second prison in Murray Bridge next to the existing prison (the new one would be for female inmates I seem to recall), but that seems to have all fallen through.

I'm not doubting that it hasn't had growth, doesn't surprise me if they purchased a product that wasn't in demand (and potentially overpaid).
It's not just sub-division in Croydon, they have period homes mainly bungalows that are in demand.

Hello Simon, yes, the Weatherill government's last budget included an expansion at Mt Gambier to 300 beds; the expansion is nearly compete apparently. Mt Gambier is also a protection/special population prison so there's a lot of paedophiles and prominent prisoners there; it's a bit divisive in the community because of that.

Mobilong (Murray Bridge) expanded recently by 110 beds but you are right - the proposed women's prison did not go ahead there.

The property was a two-bedroom unit in a block of four; that traditional cream brick kind of sixties thing you see all over Adelaide; very nice actually. Solid interior walls, generous private backyard, lock-up garage. Last owner put a new kitchen in but my friend managed to buy for the same price as the last vendor paid in 2009 - he's not looking for capital growth anyway, just somewhere to live. But it was interesting to note that there hadn't been any growth in eight years... at all.

New Port Quays has been an unmitigated disaster - anyone who bought off-the-plan there is in a world of pain. And yet the State Government wants is negotiating to develop nearly all the water-front land around the Port Harbour into apartments? Who will want to buy them?

DON'T BUY APARTMENTS in Adelaide, they don't appreciate at all - the capital growth is in the land as they said right at the end of that story.

Sonnen to manufacture home batteries at old Holden factory in Adelaide

"German battery storage giant Sonnen has announced plans to manufacture up to 10,000 battery storage units a year at the old Holden car manufacturing site in Adelaide, confirming that there is a future for manufacturing in a state with high renewables."

"Sonnen will also launch a sales and technical training facility in Adelaide dedicated to increasing skills in this new technology. sonnen expects to establish a training accreditation program to be run with TAFE SA to fulfil skilled workforce requirements locally."

"South Australia is now well past a 50 per cent share of wind and solar in its electricity mix, and is headed to more than 70 per cent by 2020, and possibly 100 per cent (in production equivalent) by 2025, according to forecasts by the Australian Energy Market Operator."

Truly, Steve Marshall is pathetic. This is a re-announcement of a program that Jay Weatherill made in February 430 jobs as battery-maker moves to SA

And the only reason Sonnen agreed to base their plant in Adelaide was because the Weatherill government guaranteed the sale of the first 50,000 units underwriting them with taxpayer money - which Marshall is also doing. This is corporate welfare, pure and simple.

Steve Marshall is even worse than expected - no action on the re-opening of the Repat Hospital, no action on extending trading hours despite claiming that he had a mandate to do so. Expect another three-and-a-half years of sitting on their hands while the state continues to lose jobs and shrink.

Sonnen begins battery storage production at old Holden car factory in Adelaide

“Sonnen is committed to our expansion and investment in South Australia with the hiring of a highly skilled operations team right here in Adelaide. This will serve as a foundation for sonnen’s growth and expansion in the future.”

Sonnen aims to produce 10,000 batteries a year to meet demand from Australian households and for export to Asia Pacific. It plans to create up to 430 new jobs in South Australia as it ramps up production as a home battery supplier for the $100 million South Australia Home Battery Scheme".

Alpha-ESS to become second battery manufacturer to set up shop in Adelaide | One Step Off The Grid

"South Australia looks to have notched up another major battery storage coup, with the news that another global giant of the booming industry, Alpha-ESS, will set up a manufacturing facility in Adelaide.

State energy minister Dan van Holst Pelekaan said on Wednesday that Alpha-ESS, which has offices in China, Germany and Australia, had signed an agreement with the South Australian government to make more than 8,000 of their SMILE 5 home batteries in Adelaide a year."

Why South Australia energy transition is seen as model of success around the world

"the Smart Energy Conference in Sydney on Tuesday that punctured many of the principal myths around South Australia – namely that the shift tor renewables in that state has caused prices to rise, destroyed reliability, and hasn’t done much on emissions."

"So here’s a bunch of graphs to prove how wrong that is.

The first, at the top, shows the significant transition in the South Australian grid over the last 10 years. Coal disappeared by 2016, largely replaced by wind, the amount of gas generation that is used has reduced, largely displaced by rooftop solar and the emerging large scale solar. And the reliance on imports is now reduced – the state is now more likely to be exporting rather than importing.

And what has this delivered? As this next table highlights it has delivered cleaner power, the biggest drop in emissions in the main grid, the biggest reduction in emissions intensity and as an added bonus – lower prices.

Also noted a change of heart from our former PM:

"As former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull noted at the same conference, renewables are now so cheap that they can deliver both price falls and emission cuts. And South Australia has certainly delivered that, with dramatic falls in energy emissions, both in aggregate terms and in emissions intensity. What’s not to like?"
