    Hi guys,

From those who know, I am adding a fairly simple gate to an existing fence and was given this quote. Is it reasonable? Price is $880 inc gst. This is for BRISBANE.
    Thanks

    Description of Works GST Inclusive
    - Create and install gate to rear fence
    - Excavate hole and install fence posts to the outside of the existing fence
    - secure fence post with rapid set concrete
    - secure the existing fence rails to the new post with galvanized batten screws
    - cut the fence rails and create the gap for the new gate
    - source and supply new metal gate frame
    - install the hinges and hang the gate
    - install new treated pine palings to the gate frame
    - install a new latch
    - trim the tops of the gates to match the existing fence line
    - test gate for correct operation
    - remove all demolition material from site and dispose of appropriately paying any applicable council
    fees
    - leave site clean and tidy

No, I haven't. I am in kind of a hurry tbh so i thought if those on PC have an idea of the price then that would be good enough for me.

Sounds ok to me. We had gates made for two properties recently, just before Christmas so had little response when trying to get quotes. We paid more than this, and felt a bit ripped off.

I think this sounds ok, especially if you are in a hurry.

That's what I was thinking, that's its not too bad. These will be nothing fancy, just like the timber fence, same wood I guess. What kind of gates did you have?

Agree, price is ok - includes additional fence posts, gate frame & new palings.

Its a handyman job. Bunnings do sell gates although you would have to check the sizes. Estimate the hrly rate and other materials and that will give you your answer.

We had steel frames, timber palings. Nice guy, but did us no favours on price. But we had to get it done quickly and he was the only response on Hi Pages. The fencer we've used for years has just retired.

Edit: We had a small section of fencing (maybe six feet), double car sized gates on one property. And a single gate on each side of another house. It was not easy digging, tight conditions and took two long days.

It was considerably more than your quote, and considerably more work, but still, we were feeling a bit bruised financially.

Agree with the others. Gates are expensive, so I'd go with that price.

    It's a 3 hour job... with maybe $200 materials...

Just make sure you get decent hinges as most gates drop with time.

No expert at all but I reckon the time spent all up would likely be more than 3 hours...

    Thanks for hinges tip!

    Nah 3 hours...

I'd also recommend him not to use rapid set but that will involve him coming back a 2nd day once the concrete has dried..

Buuuuuuut, it is just a treated pine fence/gate

I despise rapid set concrete (has plaster added to speed up setting process/at the expense of concrete strength).

On topic - the price sounds fair to me. With running around getting materials and doing the actual task its a days labour so 500 or so plus materials. Dont forget the tradie needs to warrant his work and respond to any queries, complaints, questions etc from the customer as well.

Less on topic - Concrete type.
Most rapid set will reach 20mpa at least which is fine for a gate post. Gypsum (plaster?) increases setting time not reduce it. High early strength concrete (rapid set) is typically achieved by increasing cement ratio and adding supplementary cementitious materials such as blast furnace slag to accelerate hydration. A good choice for a relatively light load job such as this.

I’d get more quotes, but if you’re in a rush just do it. Tradies may not be interested in a small job like that if they’re busy. A handyman should be cheaper than that though.
