I have a confession, as part of my routine as a personal trainer and weight loss regime a life time ago,

the weight loss regime worked very well

I used to consume a lot of diet drinks, diet coke/pepsi max/coke zero were my choiec of drink,

i used to mix all my alcohol with diet drinks as well,

at my peak it was 1L per day in my early 20s
in my 30s, I actually got off caffeine for about 5 years, that was coffee, coke, tea as part of a challenge,

now im back on it, im doing about 2 cans per day,

i know of all the cons (yes most of its unproven ) but im not the "if its not unproven, its not true" bandwagon either. and frankly, putting in 2 cans of black artificial chemicals into by body every day scares me too

im now getting scared of the health implications, after seeing a friend get sick from a totally unrelated condition

I supose, "just quit them" is a solution.... but im not that logical :)

anyone else on the diet drinks bandwagon? :)

Just quit them is the solution. You have 100% control of what goes in your mouth so if you wanted to quit you could. For new years resolutions, for no particular reason, I quit coffee and alcohol for the year. I haven't had coffee, red bull, V, coke or pepsi all year. Not that difficult. If I ever feel like a coffee I just remind myself I quit. No lapses, no excuses, just choose not to drink it.

You couldn't pay me to drink that poison. I really believe it is toxic.

there is no proven evidence that diet drinks are poison, but to be honest I think normal coke and diet coke probably are just as bad....................

I used to have diet drinks as a treat, when I went out, or at dinners out, but one here and there meant I was buying a case every fortnight or so

    am not proud of myself

Stick 21 little post it notes in a row on the wall. Write numbers 1-21 on them. Every day you don't drink a can, take off a post it note.

This really works. Visualise it. Good luck!

Aspartame and sucralose... no thanks I also think they're poison. They worked ok for short-term weight-loss, but I kept regaining every time. Coke Zero was bloody addictive too. I finally kicked the habit, and along with a few other habitual changes I'm still shedding fat nearly 12 months later.

    Soda water can help!

Add a twist of lime and you still get all the nice bubbles without the NASTY POISON! Yay.

Cascade make it in a can now, so you could continue with your habit....Just change what is in the cans.

Don't buy them or have any at home.

When you are out and want to buy a drink, buy water. You don't have to do it forever, just today.

    And then....today....then....today....

Just one day at a time.

Just have one a day instead of 2.
Then, buy the slim cans which have less, but cost more, and have one a day of them.
Hopefully the bad value for money feeling will put you off.

i must admit, I love that refreshing taste, and the sweet taste, of diet coke

after a long session at the gym, most guys prefer a beer,
    I prefer a diet coke

    water does seem boring,

but I need to control myself

Smoking is known to cause cancer. The link to smoking and cancer is not disputable. Why have cigarettes not been banned?

If you have a look at the research publications that I linked to you will see that earlier testing protocols found aspartame was safe. However, recent research indicates the testing protocols may have been flawed and has called for an urgent review. Further, recent epidemiological evidence links artificial sweeteners with certain types of cancers in men.

You don't need the artificial sweeteners to be banned to stop drinking them. You just have to decide you want to do it.

As a suggestion, you could try the stevia sweetened coke instead of diet coke. As far as I know, Stevia is a lot better than aspartame.

    Should You Rethink 0-Calorie Drinks?

    Aspartame controversy - Wikipedia

You may have conditioned yourself to like diet coke after a workout.

Similarly, people may get hooked on diet soda because they associate it with a certain activity or behavior, as Bagi did with smoking. "You can get into a situation where you crave a diet soda by conditioning yourself," Dr. Urschel says. "[If] you stop for gas and always get a diet soda, the craving will start to come first, before you even pull into the station."

Can you get hooked on diet soda? - CNN.com

If you understand this, it might be easier to break the habit.

The only thing that changes is whats in the can. One change is easier to do than many.

Why don't you try it for a couple of weeks? Let us know how you go?

    Accountability and all....

Not directed at anyone but it always amazes me how much research people put into their financials and very little research into what they put in and on their body.

There are foods and products out there that are just as dodgy and dangerous as the bad investment purchase. You can't rely on the glossy brochure, due diligence is required everywhere ;)

Did you also know that basically all orange juice have Preservatives in them. Except the super ones that claim to have nothing added.

There was a bit of drama in the 80s or 90s about Preservative and additives etc.

It seems everything has Preservatives in it these days.

But no one seems to be caring too much about Preservatives

Yep, it's pretty bad what has been done to our food. Most yellow and not yellow kids food has the nasty Tartrazine colour 102. It has been banned in a lot of other countries but still allowed in Oz.

The worst has been the war on fat since the 70's. Sugar was cheap so let's demonize fat. Turns out they were very wrong. Do your own research people!

Maybe we are too smart for our own good.

Too much red meat apparently causes cancer
Carbs might not be the best thing physically but cavemen never ate carbs (that's the argument I hear often) which doesn't make any sense to me.

A glass of red wine a day is better than no alcohol
I've even heard that sparkling beverages are bad for your stomach..... Which doesn't surprise me

The list goes on for ever
