Well done Sackie I will also be pulling the trigger on some hopefully large'ish LIC & ETF purchases in 2019.

You should take comfort in the fact in order for all your equity to disappear in your LIC/ETF portfolio all the companies contained in them would need to go bankrupt - relatively unlikely I would think

Cheers. It actually is only an afterthought now. Was really no biggie. I'll review in a few years. Good luck to you too.

All great in theory. Do you have the nerve to hold Amazon from $100 to $10 in 2001-2002? Mind you it’s $2000 a few months ago. If you’ve gone all in how do you know you’re not just wrong?

    I’d have to say...

    Making money = right.

    Losing money = wrong.

I know you’re going to say plenty of garbage companies go up in boom times. Well you’re right for getting into the momentum trade and right to realise it’s garbage and take profits before too late

Seems reasonable but sometimes only the future will reveal that.

    I wasn't actually, but it's a fair point. ;)

There is never any certainty with investing, no matter who you are. All you can do is invest according to your risk profile and make the best investment decisions you can at the time.

Hi @Sackie . Thanks for this thread, I've read it 2 times already. How's your portfolio performing? Are you happy with these choices? I'm asking because I'm looking at investing in ETF & LICs as well (I recently converted from investing only in properties). Thanks

@Sackie what a nice reading your post has served to me as I am in the similar phase as you were in 2018. This post helped understand and clear too many things for me. Thanks.

@Nodrog @The Falcon first up thanks for sharing your views as your posts and your experiences really help unfold the idea of passive income.

I am curious to pick your experienced brains, on what your thoughts are with having following ETF in portfolio - 1. VAS 2. VTS & 3. VEU (where 2&3 replace VGS) for similar share holdings as the funds would allow to diversify in both US and ex-US markets thereby keeping the overall avg MER (VTS+VEU) less than what is charged for by VGS.

Main concern is that VTS / VEU are domiciled in the US with the potential exposure to US Estate Tax. The following search captures some previous discussion about this:
