I did suggest I was going to have a break from property forums... I made it a month :)

Some of you may remember me as hobo-jo from Somersoft Property Forums. That was a handle I started using online around 15 years ago, figured I'd take the opportunity to update to the one I use now on several other investment forums & my blog.

I have still only owned a single property, but expect that to change over coming years as better (local) opportunities present ;)

I write semi-regularly about bullion and property at http://www.bullionbaron.com/

    p.s. I love charts.

Dear Bullion Baron, I believe the price of gold has dropped, should I buy a bit?
    Cheers,

What would you be buying it for (price speculation, insurance, pet rock)?

I think answering that directly would constitute financial advice, but some things to consider:

    - Lower AUD means that it's not as "cheap" today as it might be considered in the US (I was a heavier buyer of Gold late last year in the A$13XX's)
    - It's my view that Gold is an important part of any investors long term portfolio as an insurance asset (do you own any already?)
    - Could the sentiment in Gold possibly get any worse? Headlines suggesting Gold is 'dead', a textbook short, losing it's safe haven status, indicate the metal may be in the process of forming a similar bottom to that seen in 2008 (final capitulation by investors)
    - Record net long positions from hedge funds in 2011 indicated the top was near, could record net shorts be an indicator the bottom is in or near? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CKvXKD2VAAAUGXw.jpg

I am thinking about buying a few more ounces of Gold myself this weekend, but already have plenty, so no great loss if I don't.

Hmmm not me (the project), perhaps that was @hobo?

I have been following the APRA threads here with interest for the last few days :)

Welcome, always good to have different views around.

How are you buying gold? Is it the physical bars, gold etf or gold companies?

@skater, not yet, but expect it in the next couple of years ;)

Physical bars and coins, stored in a safe deposit box (but most of it purchased many years ago, I don't buy that much these days). I do have some exposure to Gold mining companies in my super as well.

Hobo?, I'm getting confused, too many hobos!, reminds me of the park at the back of the train station.

I still got my 8 Olympic gold coins. Will sell them for 50K. Any idea how many lifetimes I'll need to wait? Cheers

Once I have purchased again in the next couple of years we will need to find someone else to keep this place honest, because by then I will have joined the spruikers here, making nonsense up about 50,000 jobs coming to Adelaide, talking about the never ending perma boom where house prices double every 5-7 years, etc.

Last I saw (a few months ago) these sets sell for circa $5k, so you might be waiting awhile! But I will point out that Gold rose around 8.5x in the last few years of the last great bull market ('76-80)... if the value of the set gets above $40k in the next few years it might be a good time to sell.
