With the share markets plummeting around the world at the moment.... and all the negative commentary that comes with it .......I want to know, why do we, society, view making money (prices going up) as "good" and losing money (prices going down) as "bad" ???

    :)

Why do we like the smell of our own brand? We just do.

Money amplifies human potential and gives the power of choice. If you lose money, it means there will be a lot less choices in your life. Especially when you have laboured hard for the money and delay gratification to allow yourself to enjoy the future, how would you feel if you lose it?

Money is a median of exchange. Money = Power and choices.

    2 possible core elements here:
    - Up to a point, money provides additional opportunity.
    - Money is a symbol of success, prosperity, growth.

If we lose money, it can feel like we made poor choices, which means we're crap. No-one wants to be crap. That's why trading is so difficult, it takes a special someone to lose money and not personalise it. Most people can't do it.

The reality is a large part of our freedom and choice availability in life is determined by money.

    Its just the reality.

Losing money (a large amount of money) means losing choices in life. No one wants that.

It's also the loss of dreams - you buy an investment to do 'x' which is very close to your heart. It doesn't work out and you lose your cash, 'x' is no longer happening. That can be devastating, depending on how big the dream is. Retiring for eg - people who lost $$'s in the GFC and had to work another 10 years, that would be heart breaking for those people who had been counting the days.

I reckon losing money is neither good or bad. It has no meaning except for the meaning you give it.

I'm just interested in other peoples view points. Have started a new book project and doing "research on humans" :)

In many cases money = freedom. It also means access to good health and dental care; a choice of how you want your children to be educated; entrance to areas you want to live; discretionary spending; relaxing and eating out; beautiful material things; ensuring those you love are well looked after in their old age and in sickness. I could go on, but you get the picture.

Our properties have dropped in value about $4m in the last 3 years ... and I'm really glad it happened, in fact my husband commented last night that he too is glad it happened. We are both really happy and still have the power of choice. Does having more money really mean more choice or is it just a belief we have created?

Yes it is a median of exchange. But does it really mean more power? Or is that a belief that we have created? Mother teresa was poor yet she had a lot of power.

I know! Isn't it time we started to detach our worth from our results ? Failure/losing money is imminent if you want to make money.

Yes I agree money is a big thing in our every day lives, but I do wonder if it really means losing choices? Or wether we make it mean that we have less choices? Where there is a will there is a way, right?

Yes that is so true. It was my addiction to the expectation of being rich that hurt more than losing money itself..... interesting isn't it?

You don't have to wonder. Go and talk to many retirees who have a decent amount of life savings, own their place and STILL can't live a life full of choices they would love to have, and struggle daily.

Is that really true? Or did the retirees choose to maintain the mindset of struggle and lack?... which is therefore reflected in their world? What if they chose to have a mindset of abundance? And does abundance have to come only in the form of money...or is that a limitation that society places on itself?

PS - thanks for being a part of the conversation, I intend to write about this and debunk some myths that are bothering me at the moment!

We work hard for that money so losing it makes that a complete waste of time. Unless you genuinely enjoy your job, which very few people do, then you're doing something that you'd rather not be doing to make that money in the first place. To then get nothing for it is the epitome of bad. The idea is to make that work worth it by then spending that money for genuinely good experiences. So even if you don't think that losing money is bad you surely have to think that losing the holiday it would have bought or the dinner with friends or whatever it cost you is bad and thus, losing the money is inherently bad.

Have you ever been robbed? Was it fun? Did you enjoy it? Normal people don't enjoy it, normal people will actively avoid it. That's because it's bad.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

So, if money = freedom do you make that mean that you have less freedom if you have no/little money? Could freedom be a state thats created from within? rather than linked to an external thing that sometimes we can't control?
