Thanks for everyone's replies, to those suggesting that I get other quotes. I'm going to take your advice. The plumber who put the camera down said that I can show other plumbers the video he took - which is good I guess.

Yea I'm interested in seeing what I can as far as it being sold off like that when it was never disclosed to me. Even the plumber said its previous owner was 'very dodgy'.

Is there anyone in particular that I would speak to about the ethics of not disclosing the past history?

Have a chat to your settlement agent about it, won't be the 1st time they've seen someone experienced similar

This is one of my biggest fears with buying an older IP. Had a camera inspection on one of my IP's last week to identify where the pipes go in the yard. It was quick and easy, I watched the video onsite. Got me wondering, is it worth it to get a camera inspection during the B&P on an older style house...?

    The cost was about $300...

Wow ouch, $7k. Could have just happened, might have already been a problem. I like to do a lot of investigating to scope out the likelihood of these sorts of problems.

Claiming a 7k repairs deduction in the same year as acquisition would be the red flag to the ATO which could result in an enquiry being made and then up to you to explain when the damage was done and whether it should be capitalised or expensed.

ATO may even just do an amended assessment and you then have to argue it out. Which of course you wouldnt win as it is a capital expense.

If a major piece of work it might need to be capitalised anyway.

I'm a plumber if you want to try and save your self some money dig up the area where there is water coming out of the ground , expose the pipe so the plumber can see exactly what he is dealing with it should save you a heap on estimations. 2m isn't that deep should only take a couple of hours to dig up the section.

If the pipe is completely stuffed its sometimes cheaper and easier just to divert it and re run it.

    Good luck

$7k sounds ridiculous. Consider an excavator costs maybe $120/hr it wouldn't take long to dig down 2m even if you are talking about multiple breaks and replacing a whole length of pipe. The pipe itself is cheap.

Thanks a lot guys, i appreciate everyone's help

Do you guys mean dig it with a shovel of possible? Lol

That sounds wild but I'd give it a crack

Excuse my lack of knowledge here BUT when hiring an excavator, is it approx. $120 p/hour including someone to drive it ?

Crazy. If I knew how to do it, I would help you do it. I just paid over $600 for blocked sewerage in my Edens landing property

From your picture, it looks like you do know how to dig up a sewerage pipe!

    Algester, Southside :)

Also, Who would I speak to in regards to this issue not being mentioned when I purchased property? Is that allowed to happen?

Solicitor, don't like your chances though unless they made false and misleading statements or promises.

    Name Names!

I would also consider Urban Utilities - get a quote- they used to do this stuff (esp where it goes in the Mains) but not sure if they do anymore.

Do you mean you paid a plumber for a camera down the pipes to ID where they were and if they were all operating ok? Which company did this? Curious to know as I have a similar issue...

I agree. I just see this type of thing as something that comes with an older property. We've had the same thing happen. We had a sewerage overflow. Neighbours told us the sewerage overflowed into the yard every six months or so. We just had a new sewer line run. Cost us about $3k from memory. I never thought about being angry with the seller or wanting to follow it up.

I've asked a plumber we use, but Algester is a bit far for him, when he has plenty of work closer in.

Why not put this job up on one of the trade quote sites and see what comes back?
