Same engine with a different head and fuel system. Similar power and tourque outputs from both but the newer commonrail version (in Patrols from 2007 onward) is lower emissions and does not have the premature failure issues that the older version had.

    Yep - that's a 'grenade'.
Nissan fixed the issue in the 2003 model which is the 3rd generation (GU3 aka GUIII).

In saying that there are still some GU1 and GU2s around with 300-500,000kms on the clock. My mate had one of the early models and pushed it out to around 400,000 without an issue. It ended up falling apart around the drive train (rusted) (happens after lots of beach driving and boat launching and living 150m from the beach)

Again - these are small engines, so regular oil changing will help keep her clean on the inside. I do engine oil, filter and fuel filter changes at 5,000kms.

Look after them and they last for as long as you will need them to last.

    Hi All,

I just wanted to thank everyone here for their advice and input, MUCH APPRECIATED!

Thank you @bob shovel @Blacky @Rex for replying to all my PMs with good solid advice :)

I had an offer accepted for the 2008 Nissan Patrol ST GU 6 Manual 4x4 MY08 (119km).

    https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Nissan-Patrol-2008/SSE-AD-5609719/?Cr=0

This vehicle was about $6k below my initial budget and comes with a few accessories (winch, racks, 2 x spare wheel carrier, rod holders, internal covers for seats, etc).

The car did go in for a 120km service yesterday, but I still plan do a RACQ inspection next week, which my offer was subject too.

    Cheers,
    Robbie

If youre not getting bogged youre not trying hard enough!*

But as you drive a Nissan, you don't need to try hard to get bogged :D:p

Geez - getting 'advice' from three different people on a subject like a 4x4 could well have given you 3 very different directions.

    Brave man!

Are there anything fun drives from Brisbane to Adelaide (and back)?

My wife and 3 kids were going to fly to Adelaide in a month, but now that we getting the new 4x4, we considering driving there.

I am still a little "scarred" from the last time we drove from Adelaide to Brisbane a year ago.. We did it in a wagon, I was sick, 3 kids in the back seat, dog (labrador) and cat in the boot. As we were relocating, we had so much luggage on us too. It was very uncomfortable.

If we do decide to drive to Adelaide (and back), I'm not sure if I should go the most direct way (3 days), or take a longer trip and see something new (happy to take 5 days). Might be a good opportunity to test out the new 4x4, however, it will be on the open roads i would imagine.

Another option is to let them fly over and have a long weekend to myself :)

    Any ideas?
