Will you download the Covid19 Location App?

The Federal Government believes restrictions on the community could be eased in the months ahead if there's more testing, greater surveillance of those infected by the coronavirus and much faster tracing of those they've had contact with.

It is developing a mobile phone app with the private sector to help monitor Australians' daily interactions.
Privacy or prolonged lockdowns? Australians to be asked to volunteer locations via coronavirus app

Call me old fashion, but I would really feel that the big brother watches, if my every movement was recorded. Saying that nowadays I am really boring person and my life circles around home, work, local cafes and shops and of course around our second home, Bunnings. Hence my resistance is more about principles than actually have something to hide

My mates in Switzerland are going ski touring (peak season now) without their mobile phones to avoid detection.

Couldn't you just buy a second phone and install the app on that and leave it in your drawer?
If you are really paranoid or intend to go somewhere

The app doesn't track your location - it tracks other app users in range via bluetooth. It is not a bad solution.

Big brother (Aust Gov, Google, Apple, carriers) already know your movements most of the time even if have paranoid settings. That horse bolted a long time ago and the local council can probably request the info under the meta data laws.

So what happens to my mum and many of her elderly friends who don't have Iphones and those that do don't even know how to use them, no credit cards (old passbook account), etc...
Do we them lock them out of society for good?
Seems like the movie Gattaca where instead of creating superior genetic humans, we will isolate or don't let them function normally within our society, those that are not immune (hence not superior) to those that are?

Gattaca is a 1997 American science fiction film written and directed by Andrew Niccol. It stars Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, with Jude Law, Loren Dean, Ernest Borgnine, Gore Vidal, and Alan Arkin appearing in supporting roles.[4] The film presents a biopunk vision of a future society driven by eugenics where potential children are conceived through genetic selection to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents.[5] The film centers on Vincent Freeman, played by Hawke, who was conceived outside the eugenics program and struggles to overcome genetic discrimination to realize his dream of going into space.

The film draws on concerns over reproductive technologies that facilitate eugenics, and the possible consequences of such technological developments for society. It also explores the idea of destiny and the ways in which it can and does govern lives. Characters in Gattaca continually battle both with society and with themselves to find their place in the world and who they are destined to be according to their genes.

The film's title is based on the letters G, A, T, and C, which stand for guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine, the four nucleobases of DNA.[6] It was a 1997 nominee for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

Does the app identify people with covid-19 ?
So your phone vibrates and buzzes when you get close to a person with covid-19 ?

Absolutely, it has the potential to be a key piece of the data gathering to help bring us out of this lock down. The early responses to this poll are pretty disappointing in my opinion.

I am amazed so many people freak out about this thing, for god's sake do people really think the government gives two ***** about the mundane websites we visit or the type of porn we like? You think ASIO or the feds can't get access to your phone info right now if they want it?

There's no way I'm downloading that app... It clashes with every principle I hold about individual freedom and civil rights. As B.Franklin said, "those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Also, even if principles weren't an issue, from a practical perspective, even if people download it, there are so many ways to go around it and cheat, that it defies the whole purpose of tracing.

How can a government tracking app be freedom? It's scary and, more importantly, it's sets a dangerous precedent for future.

This is the same founding father Ben Franklin that put the right to bear arms in the American constitution right?

Sometimes the net benefits of a safe society trump personal liberties in my opinion.

I'm not going to debate moral principles, but will instead ask you how the app will contribute to safe society when 50% or more people with C-19 are asymptomatic? For the app to work, someone has to be diagnosed, and so far the main issue was that people are walking around unaware that they're infected and hence spread the virus.

So yeah, while I agree that prohibition of guns indeed is for a safer society and its benefits justify prohibition of someone's right to carr guns, I strongly disagree that this app will contribute to a safer society.

Will we have a safer society if we allow those who don't have Covid to carry guns?

It is a lagging indicator.... You find out that you may have been exposed and take action.

The idea of the app was that if somebody is diagnosed with Covid-19, that person's phone can then be used to determine what other people they came into contact with, to try to determine the source of the virus and therefore to take steps to ensure that that source doesn't keep spreading. Contact tracing basically.

Yes, exactly - it is contact tracing in a digital way. This is something we've been (fairly successfully) doing here in Australia so far and we could continue doing (and train and employ more people to do it to create more jobs for those who lost their work).

The point is - sloppy contact tracing was never our problem, but the percentage of asymptomatic cases is. This app will not solve that issue and its benefits will be marginal. Its price will be, on the other hand, very steep - think other situations in future and less benevolent goverments who will see this as a precedent.

While it is ultimately your personal decision, it's one that shouldn't be decided lightly under media hysteria and without any critical thinking, whatever the outcome of your decision might be. After all, this is a tool used by authoritarian governments like China and Singapore - are you happy to go down that road?
