    News just in:

Residents of the four-month-old Opal Tower apartment building at Sydney Olympic Park have been evacuated amid "cracking noises".

An emergency operation launched on Monday afternoon is ongoing, with an exclusion zone set up that includes the train station....

Guess this news is going to bring a lot of disrepute to this Builder unfortunately...

Seems to be quite common these days:

Kodo Apartments: Structural column cracks, workers evacuated - Jul 10, 2018.

    APRIL 11, 2018
A COLUMN has cracked on the $100 million Kodo Apartment tower site, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of workers and raising fears about the building’s structural integrity.

Construction of the Kerry Stokes-backed tower site on Angas St was suspended on Friday after a worker discovered a precast structural column on the sixth floor had cracked.

Seems most measures being taken are sensible precautions.
Cause of reported noises is yet to be determined.

Sydney property is literally cracking :D:D:D

In all seriousness. Only shows that Australians err on safe side. Kudos to them for not ignoring it and investigating. Could be just wind...

    • Electricity, gas and water has now been cut to the building.
    • Apparently there is significant structural movement on the 12 and 13th floors.
    • Residents reported doors wouldn't close days ago. "A few days ago the doors looked different. Like they couldn't close properly. And you do feel it [movement] sometimes when there's strong wind."
    • After the bang today, doors are jammed shut and Police Rescue is working though knocking down doors to free the trapped.

Can't blame the developer if the Underground tunneling for Sydney trains has anything to do with it?

When I heard the reporter noting the 'cracking noises' I was perplexed sad to what's a 'cracking noise' vs a pretty 'ordinary noise'.

On a serious note, has a post-tensioning cable given up the tension?

Doesn't sound too good.. full evacuation of a 392 apartment Sydney residential block due to "cracking noises"..

With the rush to build so many apartments over the last 5 years, many corners being cut it seems.. Inflammable cladding, cracking in buildings after only a few years, people signing up for one thing off the plan and getting another - it's all starting to come out.

Imagine if it was just someone with a "cracking noise machine" that was cranked up too high.

I heard on the news that the building has moved 2mm. Surely that's within tolerance.

It’s on the builders shoulders - if it’s underengineered then they could go engineer insurance. Either way the only people that win in this are the lawyers.
