    Morbid topic I know
    Strictly hypothetical

You find out that you have exactly 12 months to live today. No what ifs. No buts.

    What would you do with
    Job:
    Assets :
    Friends/family :
    Travel:
    Lifestyle:
    Anything else:

    I'll go first

Job: I'll toss it in and never think about it again.
Assets : I intend to leave my kids equal share But I won't leave them heaps. I'll leave them a good property each or two. Any other duds I'll fire sale them. If the selling process is long I'll get an executor to sell them
Friends/family : see them all regularly and take them with me on my trips. Tell and show them how much they mean to me.
Travel: I'll probably fly first or business class to all the 20 countries I want to go to and stay in 5 star hotels
Lifestyle: do anything that I've always wanted to do
Anything else: leave some money to my favourite charity. Leave no legacy
Stop exercising (hell I'm going to be gone)

    It's not that simple.

I know people that were diagnosed with HIV in the late 90's and given 6-18 months to live. They sold everything and spent it. Along came effective drugs and they're still alive today - thriving actually. They're now living in relative poverty because they were told they have a use by date.

I'd set things up so my family would be financially secure. I've figured I could do this adequately within about 3 years, fantastically given 10 years. It would likely be possible within 12 months, just not quite what I wanted.

My first hurdle is whether to tell family and friends, that I have 12 months. If I do, I'll get too much sympathy which I don't like, but if I don't explain, they 'll probably think I'm mad....

Yeah ok. Just pointing out reality - 1yr to live could be a month, or ten+ years.

Job: If I currently worked any less I think my heart would stop. I would quit my business because although it's little work it's constantly on my mind.

Assets : I don't think I would need to sell my assets to do what I want to do with a death sentence. I would have no hesitation in selling up and spending the lot.

    Friends/family : Nothing different

    Travel: Constant!

Lifestyle: Get a sex change? It's just for a year after all. I wouldn't mind experiencing life in the other gender.

Anything else: Volunteer to be a crash test dummy on a Virgin Galactic flight.

Is it 12 months of normal living and then hit by a bus? Or is 6 months of normal living and another six in a bed?

Not a bucket list thing. I have no bucket.

You're proposing fantasy. I'm a male; I in no way want to be a female.

But I wouldn't mind experiencing life as a female, Asian, Black, etc... It's just a year, I'll die if I don't like it.

I'm coming out an all new man. Or an all new woman. I haven't decided yet.

I was actually told about 10 years ago that I had 6 months to live (the big C). My now ex-husband and I started planning everything including my funeral, holidays etc. I was planning to leave my job shortly after to start travelling. About 2 weeks after diagnosis I got a call saying that they gave me the wrong patients information. No apology or anything. Was absolutely disgusted at how it was handled by the doctor. Just glad I didn't do anything too quickly. Everything was easily fixable at that stage. If only I'd listened to my parents and got a second opinion ....

Mone would be more travel and tome with family.

I am not doing those now because of work and property investing, which I also enjoy.

Next year I will be taking a break to travel more and spend more time with family. I feel grateful I will be able to do this.

So to answer @TMNT, travel and spend time with my family... or travel with my family. I would love that!

That's friggen terrible. I recall reading about a similar case in the UK where the person made major changes, selling assets, spending up big etc. Then they got the call saying mistake had been made. The person sued.

I would probably just live my life exactly as I'm living it right now. Without sounding morbid, this hypothetical is not exactly un real, everyone is going to die as a certainty it is so 100% it couldn't be more real, the only uncertainty is when. I don't feel like the 'when' changes anything once you grasp that reality.

Wait, what? No apology? AT ALL?

I would have sued the *******s. How could they think a simple phone call would make it all better. You were planning your own funeral for God's sake.
