Lombok has been touted as the next Bali for at least 20 years. It will never be primarily due to (IMHO) the different, local 'demographic' in today's climate.

I came across this hot-spot a few days ago. Don't know when this bubble will burst or If it will keep simmering like the last 30 odd years.

Ansett and I think, Jetstar, plus a couple of Indonesian airlines, tried to do direct flights to Lombok from Oz. All failed.

we visited the volcano island 3 years ago and also flew around it in a helicopter...there was much activity. amazing aerial view and witnessed the vast destruction of the area.

Im going to be pinged for off-topic, but the Mt Rinjabi (Lombok) is one of my favourite hikes.

    Higher than Mt Cook!

Tamborah on Sumbawa would have been higher intil its untimely demise early in the 19th Century.
