For me (1960s UK) it was 'pink medicine', creamy, not horrible - it might have been pink bismuth

Just call it alkhaline water so that it's good for you.

My husband's father put horse linament on the kids for anything that was sore or for achy muscles. His mother still talks about how great sulphur and treacle was. Hubby and the siblings soon learned to hide whatever was ailing them. ;)

I'm not sure if she put the sulphur and treacle on as a substitute for magnaplasm (drawing ointment) or they drank it.

Some of the crazy stuff his 92 year old mother comes out with could fill a book. Some is clearly based on a small bit of fact, spun into an amazing story, but mostly it is old wives tales.

I asked for magnaplasm recently and it is still available but I was directed to an alternative for drawing out splinters, boils etc, called Ichthammol 25%, black, smells like tar, works well. ;)

Yes, the amazing "black ointment". I still use it on myself for bites, splinters etc and the animals at times. It really does work. Will draw anything out and antibacterial.
As Wylie said - Ichthammol Ointment.

I recall my grandmother treating a burn on my hands with butter.

And yet that generation all still got vaccinated when they could.

Also good to prevent cramping due to dehydration.

Sort of precursor to Powerade or Staminade type products.

When in boarding school I can recall a ditzy nun offering a glug of mercurochrome to fix a cough. It was red, so it “looked like” cough syrup!

Luckily we were old enough to know better!

    We used Magnoplasm Paste

Though I was told there was also a paste made of non-scented soap and sugar as a drwaing agent?

I went into a pharmacy recently asking for Magnoplasm and the pharmacist put me onto the Ichthammol as it does the same thing (but is much cheaper).

And yes, the soap and sugar also works (I'm not sure of the ratio or if there's anything else to be added) and is an old home made version that my parents would have grown up with.

My hubby came home with one of these infrared heat lamps a few months ago because he liked the retro look of it. Are they safe to use?
