    Hi Guys,

    Thought I'd post some info on different resources I think are helpful to people starting out, or further on down the track. I've been meaning to get to this for some time. Note, my interest is investing in common stocks, LICs and ETFs for the long term, with a dividend growth / compounders / value focus. I am not a trader and there are others here who can assist in that regard (the Spanish horse perhaps? :)). The idea is to centralise these resources in one place so people can get an idea of different approaches, and find their own way. I'll keep it fairly brief to avoid information overload.

    Books ;

    I'll keep it simple. 6 only. Get them all and read them first. These will present you with different approaches, an understanding of markets, risk, business, the importance of mindset and finding your own way to participate that works for you...and importantly give you a framework for future reference. Of the piles of investment books I have I think these are the best starting point. Probably read in this order.

    Motivated Money , Peter Thornhill
    A Random Walk down Wall Street , Burton Malkiel
    The Economist guide to Investment Strategy , Peter Stanyer
    Buffett, the making of an American Capitalist , Roger Lowenstein
    The Education of a Value Investor, Guy Spier
    The most important thing , Howard Marks

    Podcasts ;

    Value Investing podcast from the team at Manual of ideas. A cracker. Tom Russo is pretty much my investment hero. He is interviewed a couple of times.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/value-investing-podcast-thought/id642016120?mt=2

    The Investors podcast. All over the place but usually something of interest each week. Lots of topics, one for the commute or exercise http://www.theinvestorspodcast.com/

    Blogs ;

    Tim McAleenan Jr. http://theconservativeincomeinvestor.com/ worth signing up for his updates, a true stock and history nerd. Good stuff.

    DGI http://www.dividendgrowthinvestor.com/ one for if you take an interest in this style

    http://brooklyninvestor.blogspot.com.au/ covers a lot of ground, value focus.

    http://brontecapital.blogspot.com.au/ John Hempton ex Platinum blog, interesting global value / special situation / economics.

    Oh, and watch this video....a few times.

    Ok that's it for now, a good starting point perhaps. Hopefully more will add to it :)

    Thanks Mr Falcon for the excellent resources!

    I read motivated money a few months back based on your recommendation and loved it. Will definitely work through the remaining books in your shortlist.

    Went to a Peter Thornhill talk back in 2009, been interested in shares ever since.
    I'm interested in LIC's, ETFs and individual DGI stocks. Just starting building portfolio now.
    I enjoy spending a fair amount of time on SeekingAlpha.com in particular the Dividend & Income section. Lost of good reads there. Its focus is mainly US based though with a spattering of articles about non us based large companies.
    If you're interestd in this type of thing then I find David Fish's US Dividend Champions, Contenders and Challengers an amazing resource:
    http://www.dripinvesting.org/tools/tools.asp

    I subscribe to www.fastgraphs.com

    Lastly if your'e into local LICs then don't forget this thread at Sharesguru:
    http://www.sharesguru.com.au/index.php?threads/listed-investment-companies.1607/page-67
    A link was posted on SS previously, is an amazing source of info and some of it's reglar posters used to post on SS too. I believe there may even be one a few posts above this one.

    Hope the above post as clicky links ok.

    Oops, spotted. There are and have been some great posters at the above forum's LICs thread (aside from my ramblings). There used to be a poster (SatayKing) some years ago who was a real inspiration and source of wisdom. Unfortunately when he left he deleted his posts. Benthonic (and Judd, seems to have disappeared) are excellent value.

    It's pretty quiet there nowadays but the LIC thread is a great resource in my humble opinion. I've been a huge fan of LICs for many years and learnt a lot and enjoyed the longer term approach to dividend investing discussion in the above mentioned thread. No market legends there, just real investors who have been in the game long enough to know that this approach works through good times and BAD! My wife and I (early to mid 50's) are both retired now so our investments really do need to provide reliable income. And the older LICs in particular have an incredible record in this regard!

    What are some of the useful newsletters to subscribe to keep an eye and learn about what is happening in the world of shares?

    I would be especially interested in learning about how ETFs/LICs have been performing.

    I am aware of these two resources at the moment:

    http://www.hendersonmaxwell.com.au/resources/

    http://www.switzer.com.au/

    Any other useful newsletters around?

    Eureka Report have recently started research on LICs and are also creating a LIC portfolio supposably using their best picks.

    Morningstar is another.

    I personally don't use any of these having little faith in most newsletters based on previous experience quite some time ago.

    @radson , just finished Ben Carlson's "A wealth of common sense". It's very good - well suited to the intermediate investor who has read all the usual starter books and needs to tie everything together.
