So one of me tenants doesn't want to renew her lease for 6 months. When I asked why (thinking its probably the rent or something cos we've never had any issues) she said that she knows we are demolishing in 6 months or so and feels very sad that every time she waters the garden or cleans the home etc she knows it will be torn down eventually... I even offered to lower the rent by 20% and she said no thank you. She's a lovely lady and we've never had any issues whatsoever in 2 years.

To be honest I was blown away by her sentiments. Do renters really get attached to a rental and make it their 'home' emotionally? I just couldn't understand it. I think I've been living in my own world for so long I just don't know what others do and how they live...She was really devastated on the phone talking about the demolition and destroying the great home... I still cant believe her anguish..:(

    Any similar stories..?

:( so sorry for your tenant... some people are very emotionally attached to things.... like my volleyball teammate who, when I decided to change the uniforms, insisted on "framing it" as a momento for all the comps we had won.. WTF??? which means I lose a uniform to use for other purposes......

Yes, absolutely. It's still their home, regardless of whether they own it or are renting it.

I have some tenants that have really made it their own, got the gardens looking nice, improved upon them etc

She is great. I was thinking about it but they are all rented for at least 9 months.

Yep she looks after the gardens well. I do feel for her.

I guess I don't know the renting feeling as I've never rented before.

We've rented this house for 11 years now ... it is our home.

After we moved to Sydney, we rented out our ex-PPOR and only ever had one set of tenants in the place until we sold it to an owner-occupier 16 years later. My wife and I agreed that they looked after the place better than we ever did when we lived there!

Not every tenant considers the place they live in a short-term commodity item.

We also have tenants who are very attached to our places. I always make sure when I'm emailing them or speaking with them I call it "your house". We might own it, but it is "their" house.

Leo, I think the answer is in your signature.. "Capitalist Leader of the Narcissistic Mindset Brigade"

One diagnostic criterion of narcissistic personality disorder is a lack of empathy and an unwillingness or inability to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others. For some people its not all about money.. they get a sense of attachment to their surroundings including the gardens which they nurture.

My home had rooms painted in all sorts of colours - pale blues and yellows. Before moving in I had the walls painted to a neutral Hogs Bristle Quarter. But I left the picture rails the original Bright Blue and Bright Yellow colours as a visual reminder and memory of how it was before we bought it.

I do feel for them and have empathy. People who lack empathy don't tend to be able to empathise with others even after the fact. Just surprised really.

Is your tenant interested with newly renovated place with new sleek bathroom? :p

I never see a rental place as 'mine' so to speak, substandard PM back then contributes as well. I can see how for some people see it that way though.

    Interesting.

when we rented, we looked after the house, but never felt we attached to it. My wife, kids and me are the family, not really the "house" per say.

We have great tenants as well, they look after the house really well. I was struggling with the decision whether to increase the rent or not. Good tenants are Gold I think.

People are strange! We have one tenant who paints 'their' house on a regular basis. They've fixed heaps of stuff around the place & keep it spotless. They treat it as if they own it. I'd like more tenants like that.

This sort of things makes it a home.... I know people up in Brisbane, been in their home for about 11 years and they keep the place really neat and tidy. He's a painter and the place hasn't been painted or re-carpeted the whole time they have been there. He wants to paint it (and would do a really good job of it too) but he asked the owner to pay for the paint and the owner said no, don't paint it. Quite sad for the tenants.

Have one property where the tenants have been there since I bought it.
They have even repainted the whole property inside (one of the tenants is a painter for my PM) - was good deal, I supplied the paint and no labour costs - cant argue with that.

I get sad seeing lovely old houses get demolished - even when I have no connection to them.

Can totally relate to someone getting attached to an old home they are living in - particularly if there are nice neighbours.

"Newest" house for us in the last 25 years would be 80 years old - could have made some serious money (I suspect) with a knock down rebuild instead of restoring - but it would not be the same.

Yep. Tenants in Perth are leaving because we are demolishing the house. Except we have no plans to demo the house in the next 10 years!

EDIT: they are not looking after the gardens either.
