It's all very interesting. Sure, some are born with a lesser opportunity. Some are born with a lower IQ for instance, there might be no overcoming that. But there are plenty of people in different fields who have done pretty well with a below average intelligence, eg. entertainment/music, business etc...
By the same token, there are plenty of people with above average intelligence who never fulfil their full potential. Of course not all smart people can be a Pythagoras or Plato (what happened to the Greeks? ;)), the individual has to have the spark or inspiration to do it themselves.

Life is circumstantial and one can only take what they have as a blessing at times. Greek philosophers are a great example. Why did so many flourish 4000 years ago, because circumstances had it that Greece was dominating the known western world. It's no coincidence the greatest movies today are made in America. Try making a blockbuster in Solamia. Doesn't matter how talented you are.

I'm going to put forward the age old saying.

It's not what you know, it's who you know.

I've seen talent in various fields phase in and out.

While to stereotise, so called under performers or less talented people rise to the top and beyond.
It's not smarts, it's not ability.
Sometimes it's who's pockets you have your hands in.

The other side of this equation and it could be debated. Is these under performers show a lot more tenacity, even in the face of ridicule and failure.
Persistency is a character trait I have learnt to admire.

It's true that in some instances it's not what you know but who you know. Why 'networking' ( should sometimes read 'old boys clubs) is so often promoted in business books.

Is this the same as networking?? I know networking with the right people can take you places you would never dream of, but then you have to have an open mind and step outside your comfort zone.

On a more serious point, I was brought up never to question authority and do what I was told.

This was reinforced at uni when I took the opposite position to my tutor on a number of essays. Going into the final exam I was failing the subject so decided to simply regurgitate what he had said during the term, and what do you know I passed.

    2. I usually question authority - 0 points
    3. I went to uni to get a job, not to learn anything - 1 point! :)
    4. I'm way too productive at work - 0 points
    5. I've already been overseas more than twice - 0 points
    6. I don't have non-deductible debt - 0 points
    7. I studied several languages - 0 points
    8. I have thought about writing a book but I have never done it - 1 point! :)

I was quite the opposite to this - questioned everything and was pretty much uncontrollable as a child - I would have worn the "autism" label if they had it back then.
