    $100,000 fine for running secret hostel in Sydney supermarket

    When City of Sydney’s anti-illegal rentals task force looked behind the scenes of a low-rent supermarket in the city’s centre, rather than cans of food and crates of produce, they found a store room set up with four bunk beds.

    The shop’s disability toilet had been converted into a makeshift bathroom, complete with shower and plastic covering the walls.

    Its proprietor Amr Hassan was this week convicted and fined $100,000 – plus legal costs of $61,426 – in the Downing Centre Local Court for converting part of the ‘Banana Supermarket’ in Regent Street, Chippendale for residential use.

    rest at $100,000 fine for running secret hostel in Sydney supermarket

    They needed a Scotland Yard cop and a task force to uncover this?

    I don't know what I find hard to digest most about this.....that;

    a) someone thought this was a good enough idea to make a go of it, or

    b) people actually sought out/participated in living there.

    Best anti-illegals raid on a supermarket I have seen was here in Barcelona, the cops found a complete dead body in the Chinese supermarket freezer. It turns out he had died of natural causes, but his family did not want to notify the authorities, but instead use his residence visa to get some other Chinese person into the country, who would assume that dead persons identity.

    Especially if they are like the Koreans who beauty touchup passport photos (and even do face reshaping) for their passport photos....

    It's held in place with an elastic cord. There's no problem.

    We lived in the apartment block above this supermarket a few years ago. We often saw this guy in the lifts with a massive set of keys showing backpackers to their accommodation. There was a lot of apartments in that building with just bunk beds for short term accommodation.
