One mostly uses words to describe oneself when at job interviews - and even then, in response to a direct question.

I'm unlikely to be having any job interviews now for a long time.

i have found many people use words like empathetic, passionate, generous to describe themselves

This puts a different spin perhaps on how other people view this??

My g/friend reminds me regularly how generous she is. Lol

I'd rather let other people form their own opinion of me.

If I used good words to describe myself, I'd be regarded as boastful. If I used bad words, I'd be regarded as self deprecating, seeking contradiction. So I try not to describe myself.

(Though in this post I have done so - I'm aware of the contradiction).

At job interviews you are selling yourself, makes sense to talk yourself up?? This would be normal under these circumstances

Yes, in that circumstance, it absolutely makes sense. As long as it's done realistically, and not over the top. Often at an interview, you would be asked to give examples of when you've shown a particular personality trait, which makes it a little more objective.

One of the most common questions I recall is

Are you a team player???? Does this mean you are adaptable??

I would always vote to talk yourself up in an interview.....even if you are stretching the truth a tad

I think this is what most smart people would do

To which the answer should be: I am an extremely humble, generous, self-disciplined, passionate, witty, empathetic, fearless.straightforward, independent teams player with extraordinary adaptability... :D

Not too wrong there. We've had plenty who can talk the talk but definitely not walk the walk.

Thank goodness for probation periods BUT it means re-advertising, re-interviewing ... even worse when they come "highly recommended" by the golfing mate of the big boss or some such.... :(

when my partner was operating his business he always gave applicants a simple test, 100% guaranteed to work out who was full of BS. You either passed or failed....
i guess depends on what the job is whether this would work

half of those words are words that people should describe about you and is an opinion,

no different to a someone calling them selves "sexy" or "attractive" or "pretty", which I see on so many dating profiles, and tells me you are up yourself

edit: put "honest" and "entrepreneur" to the list,
who on earth says they're "dishonest"?
