Given that the post count does not include deleted posts, the actual 1,000,000th post (ie the post with the database ID of 1000000) was made by @Sackie back on the 26th of April this year: Ceiling fan

... for example, I just spam-banned a user who posted for the first time last night - and 4 posts were deleted from the thread they created.

By way of comparison - Somersoft took 12 years and 3 months to reach 1 million posts ... we've done it in just over 6 years.

    1 million posts on Somersoft!

I should also mention that Somersoft ended up with just over 25,000 valid members at the time it was archived - we passed that figure some time earlier this year too.

Forgive my memory but weren't there some restrictions on Somersoft regarding starting a new thread as a new member? Like you had to make at least 10 posts or something?

Given the number of "Hi I want to buy a cashflow positive, high growth IP in Somewheresville, any suggestions?" threads that get started here, I'd love to see some basic restrictions that force new folks to search, read and learn a bit first.

No - there were no general restrictions like that on Somersoft (I just fired up a copy of the old site on one of my development servers just to check). There was one section "Caveat Emptor" which had restrictions - but that was the only one.

Similar to here on PropertyChat - there are several sections (Economics / Politics) which have restrictions for new members.

In many cases I find that users tend to lurk for a while before they create an account. It's a bit difficult to force someone to "search and read" given we can't actually quantify that they have done so.

There may be difficulties sorting out the new members and restrictions but I agree with @Baker, too many just come in with their first post wanting multiple answers, without an introduction.

Also, why lurk anyway? Even if you don't want to post just join and then maybe give something first before wanting something......

Maybe you must join and wait 30 days before getting to be able to start a thread... but that will turn off some potential new site members.

Guess current members who aren't interested just need to ignore those threads.

@Simon Hampel - Maybe create a selective 'ignore' option eg posters who have been members for less than 30 days?

Actually, I think it was something like your first (5-10?) posts didn’t go live until a mod approved. Does that sound more likely?

No - that happened to some people based on the automated anti-spam system, it happens here too. But not to everyone.

HaHa, happened to me. I still remember agonizing over my first posts, hoping for acceptance by the Somersoft Illuminati.
